Operation Pluto - Pipe Lines Under The Ocean - was a highly ambitious engineering project to design, develop and construct undersea pipelines and huge pumping stations. These would pump petroleum fuel under the English Channel to support Operation OVERLORD, the Allied invasion of Normandy commencing on 6th June 1944.The route that PLUTO took across the Isle of Wight started at the Thorness beach terminal and a pumping station at Whippance Farm. Then over 14 miles it stretched across the Island, looping around Parkhurst Forest and Newport to eventually arrive at a huge storage tank hidden in Hungerberry Wood above Shanklin. From there pipes fed two pumping stations, one housed around a derelict hotel in Shanklin, the other in a part demolished Victorian fort and a golf clubhouse at Sandown. From there, 72 miles away in Europe, the Allied forces desperately needed fuel.Today, 75 years on, the route of the pipeline and the buildings associated with PLUTO have all but disappeared. But if you look closely, there still are tantalising clues spread across the Island. I thoroughly enjoy walking for its own sake, but it is sometimes nice to have a purpose, if not an excuse. So this book offers the reader 25 guided walks and detailed maps to find what still survives of the great pipeline and the pumping stations; and in doing so to plot its course. Wherever PLUTO crossed the path there was usually a unique marker. They are still out there, waiting to be discovered. The whole PLUTO project was massive undertaking. It was rapid, rushed and at times improvised. It was also at the very cutting edge of what was possible. It was always Top Secret. In the end, PLUTO was not the success that saved the Allied invasion, and in truth, it was probably a 'pipeline too far'. Immediately after the war a propaganda campaign actively sought to justify the huge expenditure of man hours and resources just before the invasion and D-Day.But none of this should detract from our admiration for the magnificent operation and the men and women who gave their all to make it happen. It came tantalizingly close to fully supporting the Allies victory, but was ultimately beaten by the vagaries of war. This then is the real story of PLUTO. A Ramble with a Purpose.

Teaching my dyslexic son to have confidence in himself, was like hitting my head against an unbreakable brick wall.Believing in my own abilities as a child was equally an impossibility, due to my severe dyslexia and academic difficulties in school. How could I possibly be brave? How could he either? When a child hears from their parents, their teachers and their friends that they can't achieve certain endeavors, they slowly begin to believe this affirmation and it inevitably leads to self doubt and failure. In order to change my son's line of thought, I sat with him and created this book of self-belief, kindness to others and most importantly, self love and appreciation.I noticed how as he read it constantly, his confidence slowly began to grow. He started to believe in himself, and the result slowly emerged into the ability to make friends, the capacity to have courage and the vigor to work harder in school. And so it was important for me to share this amazing book with the world. My hope is that kids of all ages can read it not just once or twice, but all the time, so that the positive declarations read out loud can be imbedded in their subconscious.Children all over the world need to understand that all the strength that they need is within them, despite what others might say or think, and regardless of any disabilities that they might be struggling with.A child can then ask the question:Am I enough to be me?And the delightful reply would be:Oh yes I am!

June 1976 - the year of the great summer heatwave in the UK, and in a small university town in England, a young student had just completed his final exams in architecture. His studies had introduced him to a Finnish architect called Alvar Aalto - a shining light in modern architecture and he was desperate to meet this man and experience some of his outstanding buildings.Aalto's best work was in Finland, high up near the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia, sandwiched between the powerful neighbours of Sweden and Russia. The shy and reserved Finns speak a unique language which has helped them keep their cultural identity intact, in a country which has been described as the last great wilderness in Europe.Searching for Alvar tells the true story of the author's journey into this remote, mysterious corner of the world, and his quest to understand these remarkable people and the influences that inspired Alvar Aalto to create such stunning, distinctive architecture.

DG: Most people who met you mentioned the strength of your eyes. They were "shining", "blank" and "cruel", Kubizek's mother recalled.Kubizek: "Never in my life have I seen any other person whose appearance was so completely dominated by the eyes … In fact, Adolf spoke with his eyes, and even when his lips were silent, one knew what he wanted to say."DG: Kubizek asked you many times if you found work, and you replied, "Of course not." Doesn't that suggest a dismissive attitude towards work, Herr Hitler?Hitler: I disagree. As I told you I worked whenever -DG: Yes, you said that, but I'm talking about another attribute of yours. Your bohemianism. Hitler [Chuckling]: Was I bohemian because I was enraptured by Wagnerian operas? And was I bohemian because I wanted to be an artist? But then I will readily admit to you that in all my life, I only wished to be a simple artist, maybe even going so far as to Italy, wandering about there as an unknown painter.DG: Not at all, Herr Hitler. Being an artist does not necessarily make you a bohemian. Your bohemianism exhibited itself because you airily daydreamed all your life yet without any actual action. It just so happened, not one of these daydreams were remotely connected to the realities of your real world and life.
