    Alphonse Daudet wurde am 13. Mai 1840 in Nîmes geboren und starb am 16. Dezember 1897 in Paris. Er stammte aus einer verarmten Fabrikantenfamilie. Erste kürzere Werke verfaßte er bereits mit 18 Jahren, worauf er eine Stelle als Privatsekretär des Herzogs von de Morny, Herausgeber des »Figaro« erhielt. De Morny förderte Daudets Karriere nach Kräften, unter anderem ermöglichte er ihm 1860/61 eine Reise nach Algerien. In den folgenden Jahren schrieb er eine Reihe von Werken, die seinen Ruf als des Erzählers der Provence festigten. Seine Geschichten zeichnen sich durch eine phantastische und völlig unbeschwerte Szenerie aus, bevölkert von den liebenswürdig-grotesken Charakteren des Südens.»Der Nabob«, zuerst 1877 erschienen, fällt in Daudets zweite große Schaffensperiode, die auch vom Naturalismus geprägt ist. Daudet schildert in diesem Roman die Abenteuer und Schicksale seines Helden, eines in Tunis zu Millionenreichtum gelangten Südfranzosen während der letzten Tage des Kaiserreichs.
