This book examines the links between events and sustainability, with a particular focus on how festivals and events contribute to making places more inclusive, resilient and sustainable.Previous sustainability research in events often focused on reducing the negative environmental impacts, with a corresponding lack of consideration of socio-economic dimensions. More recently, research has begun to consider events in relation to a range of economic and social issues, highlighting the growing importance of examining events through a critical lens. This book adopts a critical and broader approach to event sustainability, arguing that scholars should examine how events might contribute to sustainable development, rather than merely exploring how individual events could be made more sustainable. Accordingly, the contributors to this edited book address how events might change attitudes and behaviours by promoting sustainable lifestyles, communities and technologies. Several years ago, I put some of my writings into a little book called Manna for the Journey. Since then, I have committed more thoughts to writing, and there were other early writings that were not included in the first book. Some writings in this publication are fifty years old, and some were written in 2018. I have been inspired and challenged by several pastors including Jack Prince, Brooks Ramsey, James Hatley, Joel Snyder, Roger Lovette, Hal Poe, Mike Smith, Brent Beasley, and Stephen Cook. My early life was inspired by my father, John J. Smith, and by A. Scott Patterson. When my pen starts to write, I sometimes do not know which of these men is the inspiration behind the writing. The children of Israel needed both manna and water from the rock. I hope that these thoughts and musings provide sustenance for your journey through this life.

When fighting the insurgency in Iraq, the Coalition suffered an operational, if not strategic, surprise in the form of the IED threat. To deal with that surprise, both the United States and Australia needed to make institutional responses in a cycle that took at least 6 years. The subsequent impact of IEDs in Afghanistan suggests, in fact, that the response is still incomplete. To minimize their impact, it is critical that surprises be recognized quickly and responses initiated swiftly, especially for those in contact. The ghost story 1840-1920: A cultural history examines the British ghost story within the political contexts of the long nineteenth century. By relating the ghost story to economic, national, colonial and gendered contexts' it provides a critical re-evaluation of the period. The conjuring of a political discourse of spectrality during the nineteenth century enables a culturally sensitive reconsideration of the work of writers including Dickens, Collins, Charlotte Riddell, Vernon Lee, May Sinclair, Kipling, Le Fanu, Henry James and M.R. James. Additionally, a chapter on the interpretation of spirit messages reveals how issues relating to textual analysis were implicated within a language of the spectral. This book is the first full-length study of the British ghost story in over 30 years and it will be of interest to academics, graduate students and advanced undergraduates working on the Gothic, literary studies, historical studies, critical theory and cultural studies.
