Called a “remarkable story” by John Greenleaf Whittier and described by John Keats as “very powerful,” Wieland, Charles Brockden Brown’s disturbing 1798 tale of terror, is a masterpiece involving spontaneous combustion, disembodied voices, religious mania, and a gruesome murder based on a real-life incident. This Modern Library Paperback Classic includes Wieland’s fragmentary sequel, Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist, as well as several other important but hard-to-find Brockden Brown short stories, including “Thessalonica,” “Walstein’s School of History,” and “Death of Cicero.” This collection also reproduces the newspaper account of the murder that inspired Wieland.

Edgar Huntly; or, Memoirs of a Sleep-Walker by Charles Brockden Brown. Edgar Huntly, Or, Memoirs of a Sleepwalker is a 1799 novel by the American author Charles Brockden Brown. Edgar Huntly, a young man who lives with his uncle and sisters (his only remaining family) on a farm outside Philadelphia, is determined to learn who murdered his friend Waldegrave. Walking near the elm tree under which Waldegrave was killed late one night, Huntly sees Clithero, a servant from a neighboring farm, half-dressed, digging in the ground and weeping loudly. Huntly concludes that Clithero may be the murderer. He also concludes that Clithero is sleepwalking. Huntly decides to follow Clithero when he sleep walks. Clithero leads Huntly through rough countryside, but all this following doesn't lead to Huntly learning much about the murder. Eventually, Huntly confronts Clithero when they are both awake and demands that he confess. Clithero does confess, but not to Waldegrave's murder. Instead he tells a complicated story about his life in Ireland, where he believes he was responsible for the death of a woman who was his patron, after which he fled to Pennsylvania. Clithero claims to know nothing about Waldegrave's murder.

Arthur Mervyn is a novel written by Charles Brockden Brown, and it is also known as Memoirs of the Year 1793. The book follows the story of Arthur Mervyn, a young man who moves to Philadelphia in 1793 to start a new life. However, he soon finds himself caught up in the Yellow Fever epidemic that is ravaging the city. As Arthur tries to navigate the chaos and tragedy of the epidemic, he also becomes embroiled in a web of deceit and corruption. He meets a cast of characters, including a mysterious Frenchman, a wealthy merchant, and a beautiful but enigmatic woman. The novel is a reflection of the political and social climate of the time, with themes of class struggle, corruption, and the struggle for survival in a time of crisis. It is also a coming-of-age story, as Arthur learns about himself and the world around him in the face of extreme adversity. Overall, Arthur Mervyn is a gripping and thought-provoking novel that offers a vivid portrayal of life in 18th century America. It is a must-read for anyone interested in American literature, history, or culture. It was plain that some connection subsisted between her and Welbeck. Would she drop the subject at the point which it had now attained? Would she cease to exert herself to extract from me the desired information, or would she not rather make Welbeck a party in the cause, and prejudice my new friend against me? This was an evil proper, by all lawful means, to avoid. I knew of no other expedient than to confess to him the truth, with regard to Clavering, and explain to him the dilemma in which my adherence to my promise had involved me.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
