Im Jahr 1831 suchte der Kapitän der Beagle Fitzroy einen standesgemäßen und naturwissenschaftlich gebildeten Begleiter für eine geplante Vermessungs- und Entdeckungsfahrt nach Südamerika. Der 22jährige Darwin wurde für diese Position von seinem Lehrer und Freund Henslow empfohlen und konnte nach der erfolgten Zustimmung seines Vaters die Fahrt antreten. Die Fahrt führte die Beagle und Darwin zu den Kapverdischen Inseln, Brasilien, Argentinien, Patagonien, den Falklandinseln, Chile und Peru, weiter zu einigen Inseln des Pazifiks und über Australien und Südafrika zurück nach England und dauerte fast fünf Jahre. Während dieser Reise sammelte Darwin unzählige Tier- und Pflanzenproben, unternahm mehrfach Expeditionen in das Innere der besuchten Länder und untersuchte die Geologie der jeweiligen Länder. Die Ergebnisse dieser Reise sollten später die Grundlagen für seine Evolutionstheorie legen, auch wenn er selbst auf der Reise den berühmten Finken der Galapagosinseln nicht allzu viel Wert beimaß. Bereits auf der Rückfahrt ordnete Darwin seine Notizen, die zum Schluss 368 Seiten zoologische Notizen umfassten, die über Geologie waren mit 1383 Seiten etwa vier Mal so umfangreich. Zusätzlich hatte er 770 Seiten seines Reisetagebuchs beschrieben. Diese Neuausgabe der deutschen Übersetzung des Naturforschers Ernst Dieffenbach von 1844 wurde vollständig modernisiert und an die heutige Rechtschreibung angepasst. Außerdem wurden zahlreiche Illustrationen von R. T. Pritchett aus der englischen Ausgabe von 1890 hinzugefügt.
