A Tale of Two Cities is an 1859 historical novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel tells the story of the French Doctor Manette, his 18-year-long imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris, and his release to live in London with his daughter Lucie whom he had never met. The story is set against the conditions that led up to the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. In the Introduction to the Encyclopedia of Adventure Fiction, critic Don D'Ammassa argues that it is an adventure novel because the protagonists are in constant danger of being imprisoned or killed.

Neben so bekannten Werken wie »Oliver Twist« verfasste der große englische Romancier Charles Dickens auch eine »Geschichte Englands für Jung und Alt«. Sie erschien zwischen 1851 und 1853 zunächst als Serie in der von ihm herausgegebenen Wochenzeitschrift »Household Words«, bevor sie wegen des großen Erfolges auch als Buch veröffentlicht wurde. Dickens ist hier auf der Höhe seiner Kunst: Spielerisch gelingt es ihm, mittels anschaulicher Sprache und ungewöhnlicher Bilder die jeweiligen Herrscher und Epochen zum Leben zu erwecken. Dabei hält er sich auch mit moralischen Wertungen nicht zurück: So nennt er Johann Ohneland einen »niedrigen Feigling und abscheulichen Bösewicht«, während er Heinrich VIII. gar als »Schandfleck für die Geschichte Englands« bezeichnet. Die »Geschichte Englands für Jung und Alt« erfreute sich großer Beliebtheit und kam bis weit in das 20. Jahrhundert auch an englischen Schulen zum Einsatz. Die deutsche Übersetzung erschien zeitgleich mit der Originalausgabe im Verlag Duncker & Humblot und wurde nun neu aufgelegt. Das Werk ist in drei Teile untergliedert: Im ersten Teil wird die Geschichte Englands von den Feldzügen Cäsars bis zum Tode König Johanns (1216) behandelt. Der zweite Teil deckt die Periode von der Herrschaft Heinrichs III. bis zum Tode Richards III. (1485) ab, während der dritte Teil mit der Amtszeit Heinrichs VII. einsetzt und mit der Krönung Königin Victorias (1837) endet. Über seine herrschende Regentin weiß Dickens natürlich nur Gutes zu berichten ¿ hier schreckte der Meister, der in seinen Werken so oft die sozialen Missstände seiner Zeit anprangerte, offenbar vor kritischen Tönen zurück.
