Reflections in Palestine, 1883 is a book written by Charles George Gordon and published in 1884. The book is a personal account of Gordon's travels and observations during his time in Palestine in 1883. Gordon was a British Army officer and administrator who had been sent to Palestine to help improve the living conditions of the local population. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which focuses on a different aspect of Gordon's experiences in Palestine. He writes about the people he met, the places he visited, and the customs and traditions of the local population. Gordon also reflects on the historical and religious significance of many of the sites he visited, including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Mount of Olives. Throughout the book, Gordon provides vivid descriptions of the landscapes and scenery of Palestine, as well as his own personal reflections on the beauty and majesty of the region. He also discusses the political and social issues facing Palestine at the time, including the tensions between different religious and ethnic groups, and the challenges of modernization and development. Overall, Reflections in Palestine, 1883 is a fascinating and insightful account of one man's experiences in a complex and historically rich region. It offers a unique glimpse into the culture and traditions of Palestine at a pivotal moment in its history, and provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the region in the modern era. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. This volume of letters was published in 1884, when General Gordon (1833-85) was engaged in the controversial defence of Khartoum that claimed his life the following year. The reputation of 'Chinese' Gordon, a complex figure, unpopular with the British government and military but adored by the people and press, was fed by works such as this. Covering his time in the Crimea as a young lieutenant, and later in the drawing up of the new frontiers between the Russian and Ottoman empires, these letters were published by his later biographer, Demetrius C. Boulger (1853-1928) as evidence of Gordon's strength of character and value as a military leader. One reviewer noted in them an 'indomitable cheerfulness of disposition, patient endurance, trustful fatalism, simple courage and faith, ... [and] single-hearted devotion to duty', words which reflected the popular view of Gordon as a symbol of British national pride and imperial honour.
