Christine, ein armes Mädchen von etwa zehn Jahren, pflückte in dem Walde Erdbeeren. Es war ein heißer Nachmittag, und an den sonnichten Waldplätzen, wo kein kühlendes Lüftchen hinkam, war es fast zum verschmachten schwühl. Ihr leichtes Strohhütchen vermochte nicht mehr den brennenden Sonnenstrahlen zu wehren. Die hellen Schweißtropfen standen ihr beständig auf der Stirne, und ihre Wangen waren wie Glut. Dennoch pflückte sie, ohne aufzusehen, emsig fort. ¿Denn, sagte sie freudig, indem sie mit ihrem weißen Tuche den Schweiß abwischte, es ist ja für meine kranke Mutter. Das Geld, das ich aus den Beeren erlöse, verschafft ihr doch wieder eine kleine Erquickung!¿Gegen Abend ging sie, mit ihrem Körbchen voll Beeren am Arme, durch den Wald nach Hause. Es fing an zu regnen. Immer lauter rauschten die Regentropfen in den Blättern der Bäume, und aus der Ferne her donnerte es sehr stark. Als sie aus dem Walde heraus kam, erhob sich ein Sturmwind; ein heftiger Platzregen schlug ihr entgegen, und an dem glühendrothen Abendhimmel standen dunkle Gewitterwolken, wie Gebirge auf einander gethürmt. Sie suchte sich, fern von den hohen Bäumen, unter niedrigen Haselstauden ein sicheres Plätzchen, stand hier unter, und wartete, bis das Gewitter vorüber wäre.

Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work.We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs.
