Und wer hätte denn auch, ungerechnet die Gefahr auf dem schauerlichen, unbekannten Meere, Asien, Afrika oder Italien verlassen und nach Germanien ziehen mögen, in ein ungestaltes Land unter rauhem Himmel, wüst zu bewohnen und anzuschauen für alle, die da nicht heimisch sind?Sie feiern in alten Liedern, den einzigen Denkmälern ihrer Überlieferung und Geschichte, einen erdgeborenen Gott Tuisto und seinen Sohn Mannus, den Urvater und Begründer ihres Stammes. Mannus habe drei Söhne gehabt, nach denen die Völker nächst dem Nordmeer Ingävonen, die im Innern Herminonen, die übrigen Istävonen genannt würden. Andere behaupten (spielt doch hier fernste Sage und Willkür), es habe mehr Söhne des Gottes, also auch mehr Volksbezeichnungen gegeben, Marsen, Gambrivier, Sueben, Vandilier, und das seien echte alte Namen. Das Wort Germanien sei ziemlich neu und erst vor einiger Zeit aufgekommen: die ersten, die den Rhein überschritten und die Gallier vertrieben, jetzt Tungrer, seien damals Germanen genannt worden, und allmählich habe sich der Name eines einzelnen Stammes und nicht eines Volkes behauptet.
