Darüber hinaus werden empirische Befunde und Theorien der Studienabbruchforschung dargestellt. Es wird deutlich, dass sich Theorie und Empirie derzeit noch deutlich unterscheiden und dass die amerikanische Tradition des Forschungsfeldes länger und ausgeprägter ist. Es sollen folgende Fragen geklärt werden: Wie ist eine Bestimmung der Abbruchquote möglich? Welche Faktoren beeinflussen das Abbruchverhalten von Studierenden? Wie sehen die Konsequenzen des Studienabbruchs aus und wie ist dieser zu bewerten? Wo können Maßnahmen zur Reduzierung des Studienabbruchs ansetzen? Wie kann eine zukünftige Forschung zum Studienabbruch aussehen?Studienabbruch ist ein Phänomen, das jede Hochschule in geringerem oder größerem Ausmaß betrifft. So beendet durchschnittlich jeder vierte Studienanfänger sein Studium vorzeitig und ohne Abschluss. Ein Abbruch der Hochschulausbildung muss nicht notwendig ein berufliches Scheitern nach sich ziehen - sieht man einige prominente Studienabbrecher wie Günter Jauch oder Jörg Pilawa doch täglich im Fernsehen. Doch dürften die Berufsmöglichkeiten davon stark eingeschränkt werden - ganz abgesehen von den persönlichen Enttäuschungen, die damit in der Regel verbunden sind.
