»Eine Untersuchung über die Prinzipien der Moral« (1751) ist Humes ausgereifteste Erörterung zur Frage der Begründung und Charakterisierung moralischer Entscheidungen und Auffassungen. Noch heute hat seine Moralphilosophie eine nicht zu unterschätzende Bedeutung für die philosophische Debatte zur Grundlegung der Ethik.Der Autor selbst hält diese Schrift, die inhaltlich eine Neufassung des 3. Buches seines »Treatise of Human Nature« darstellt, in seinen autobiographischen Aufzeichnungen für »unvergleichlich viel besser« als alle seine anderen Werke.Zu dieser Einschätzung kommt er wohl deshalb, weil er hier vollbringt, was dort nur gefordert wurde: die strikte Loslösung der Ethik von der Anthropologie. Nicht ein zum Wesen des Menschen gehörender 'moral sense', sondern die 'utility' (Nützlichkeit) einer Tugend oder Eigenschaft - für das Wohl der anderen wie auch des eigenen - wird von Hume als das eigentliche Kriterium für die Beurteilung moralischer Prinzipien entdeckt und herangezogen. Noch heute hat seine Moralphilosophie eine nicht zu unterschätzende Bedeutung für die philosophische Debatte zur Grundlegung der Ethik. Seine Theorie des 'idealen Zuschauers', die Theorie des moralischen Sinns und seine kritischen Ausführungen zum Utilitarismus werden daher immer wieder diskutiert und neu interpretiert.Wie fragwürdig auch immer manche Aspekte der Humeschen Psychologie geworden sind, sein Versuch, eine Moralpsychologie zu begründen, ist gegenwärtig von großer Bedeutung. Denn deutlich wie kein anderer hat Hume gezeigt, dass jede Theorie, die die Betrachtung psychologischer Fragen a priori aus der Ethik ausschließt, letztlich irrelevant bleiben muss. Und so ist Humes Moraltheorie gerade in den letzten Jahren zu einer ernsthaften Alternative zur Kantischen Ethik einerseits und dem Utilitarismus andererseits geworden.
