    Tegen het einde van de negentiende eeuw maakte de Franse ontdekkingsreiziger Désiré Charnay enkele reizen naar Yucatán en Chiapas in Mexico. Zijn verslag publiceerde hij onder de titel: Ancient Cities in the New World. Hij beschreef niet alleen de prachtige steden van de Oude Maya's, maar ook de moeizame maar spectaculaire reis daar naartoe. Hij maakte vele foto's van mensen in hun natuurlijke omgeving, waardoor zijn foto's zeer veel verschilden met andere foto's uit zijn tijd. Van deze foto's werden prachtige tekeningen gemaakt waarmee zijn boek rijkelijk werd geïllustreerd. Deze Nederlandstalige editie uit 1887 wordt voorafgegaan door een voorwoord van antropoloog Sebastiaan Roeling, die een kort overzicht geeft van het leven van deze Franse wetenschapper, reiziger en fotograaf.
