Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,7, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Anglistisch/Amerikanistisches Institut), course: Hauptseminar: Christopher Marlowe, language: English, abstract: Christopher Marlowe was born in February 1564 and wrote most of his plays in the 1580¿s and 1590¿s. One of his most famous plays written in this time is The Jew of Malta and the topic of this paper as well. This play was written around 1590 (the exact date is not known). At that time England was in a rather complicated situation in terms of religion and policy. Queen Elizabeth I. tried to change the major religion from Catholicism towards Protestantism. Furthermore the religious reformation in Germany enacted by Martin Luther had a widespread influence on every European state and also on England. The entire era between the 14th and the 16th century was a time full of changes, revolutions and reformations established in Italy, where the term Renaissance was initiated. In that confusing time a group of people was blamed for everything bad that happened and was hunted all over Europe ¿ the Jews. Most of the Jews came to Europe during the early Middle Ages around 1000 AD trying to find a calm place to live and to make a living by trade and craft. But after some time they developed a talent for money-trade and commerce and most of the Jewish families got rich. This was not for their advantage because most Europeans got jealous and the Jews were first avoided by the citizens of their hometowns, later even outlawed. The story of Marlowe¿s Jew is strongly connected to the history of the Jews and the Renaissance period, which is the main topic of this assignment. I am going to find out how Jewish the Jew of Malta really was in connection to Renaissance history.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 3,0, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Anglistisch/Amerikanistisches Institut), course: Proseminar: Shakepearean plays and their literarary reception in the Restoration Period, language: English, abstract: John Dryden was one of the most famous writers of the 17th century and one of the most brilliant drama theorists. Therefore this paper wants to show the concepts of drama by John Dryden and Aristotle on the examples of Dryden¿s All for Love and Shakespeare¿s play Antony and Cleopatra as the adaptation original. The theory of the drama concept is based mainly on Aristotle, which is the fundament of all tragedy and comedy and especially for John Dryden¿s concept. Dryden used the theory of Aristotle very strictly and therefore shaped the tragedy writing of his time and after it will be the thesis of this paper. To prove this thesis the classical drama concept of Aristotle, which is the fundament of Shakespeare¿s and Dryden¿s theory, must be explained. Secondly Dryden¿s theory will be demonstrated as well as the concept of theatre in his time. Dryden lived in the Restoration era, so his thinking and his works are shaped by this time. Therefore Dryden¿s theory and concept of drama will be analyzed in its historical context. After this discussion there will be an analyses of Dryden¿s way to adapt Shakespeare and his purpose by writing All for Love, which is the mostly read adaptation of Shakespeare. There will be a discussion of the character conception, the language of Dryden and the Restoration period and the so called three unities based on Aristotle¿s theory. The story of this play will be explained and the characters within this story. There will also be an analyses of the very special and typical scene of All for Love when Cleopatra and Octavia, the two rivals, speak to each other, and of other scenes as well. Afterwards follows a discussion of the themes love and duty, which are very typical for the Restoration period and the distinctive interpretation of Dryden in his play. Antony as the hero of this play will be discussed in comparison to Shakespeare¿s Antony and with it the hero theory of Aristotle and Dryden. All these analyses are based on the concept of drama by Aristotle and the rules Dryden invented.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Anglistisch/Amerikanistisches Institut), course: Landeskunde ¿ Major Evants and Figures in American History, language: English, abstract: The American Civil War of 1861 to 1865, was one of the most important and worst events in American history. This extremely bloody and cruel war, in which Americans fought against themselves, had many causes. From the Decleration of Independence 1776 to the war itsself, many problems concerning morality, the Westward movement, slavery and ethnicity occured. Nowadays many people think that there was only one reason for the Civil War ¿ namely slavery. Keeping this strong generalisation in mind, I want to explain that here were quite a lot of factors and events piled up over decades to explode in the 1860¿s.The following chapters will explain the situation from 1820 to the beginning of the Civil War. I am going to start with the situation in the 1850¿s and before and go on with the war against Mexico an its aftermath. After that I want to decode the complicated situation about the decisions on slavery, based on the two chapters before. In the last two parts of the text the last steps to the Civil War will be described in detail. That includes the ¿Kansas-Nebraska-Act¿ and the election of Abraham Lincoln to president. All these events named are known as the maincauses of the Civil War by historians, on which this assignment is based.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,7, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Anglistisch/Amerikanistisches Institut), course: Hauptseminar: Shakespeare in the movies, language: English, abstract: Shakespeare was, arguably, the most interesting author of the Renaissance and still is one of the most taught and influential writers today. That is also the reason for so many films being based on Shakespeare¿s tragedies and comedies. The most successful period of making movies on Shakespearean dramas in history was the twentieth century. Very well-known and talented directors of the time challenged each other in making Shakespearean movies. Most successful for example were Sven Gade with his silent movie of Hamlet, Franco Zefferelli using Mel Gibson¿s talent also in Hamlet, as well as Kenneth Brannagh and many others. However the most famous films are the Shakespeare adaptations of Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles. Both had a lot of talent in being director, main actor and producer in one person in most of their productions. Because of their very interesting version and vision of Shakespeare, the Hamlet adaptation by Laurence Oliver and the Macbeth adaptation by Orson Welles will be the subject of this paper. The first topic in the first chapter of this assignment will be Laurence Olivier with his adaptation of Shakespeare¿s Hamlet. There will be a discussion on the concept of his film in general, which includes Olivier¿s vision of the setting, the time the film takes place in and the cutting of original scenes in Shakespeare. The centre of this paper will be the discussion of the interior and exterior elements of the film, influencing each other contrastively. The third chapter will discuss Orson Welles¿s adaptation of Macbeth. Similar to the previous chapter, the concept and the background of the film will be examined and hence the special methods of Welles to express the interior and exterior elements of his movie will be discussed. According to this research of both films a summery will show, that the two diverse versions of two different Shakespearean plays are in many ways similar to each other, besides being released in the same year.

Lesson Plan from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,7, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Anglistisch/Amerikanistisches Institut), course: Proseminar: Transatlantic E-Mail exchange, language: English, abstract: The Wave is a movie based on real circumstances: A history teacher in the USA tried to answer the questions of his students: Why was it possible that the national socialists could move a whole nation to war? Why did the Germans not stop the killings in the concentration camps and why did most of them not know what was happening there? Is a dictatorship like the one of Hitler in Germany possible again in modern times? To answer these questions the teacher made an experiment to show the students what a dictatorship is about. However the project went wrong and the story moved around the world. At first a movie was made in the 80¿s in the USA for television, later a novel was written by Morton Rhue and last year a German movie was produced with Jürgen Vogel in the male main character role. The movies and the novel caused a lot of discussions about the National Socialism in Germany in the 1930¿s and 40¿s and about the possibility of autocracies in general. This movie shows what is needed to develop a dictatorship and how people change during this process. In the USA German history is not taught very detailed, therefore many students have a lot of questions when it comes to the topic of the Second World War. As well as the students in the 80¿s, students of today can not imagine how Hitler came to rule Germany and to kill so many people. Even German students often do not understand the fanaticism of the generations of their grandparents for that system. Hence there is a need for explanation in both countries. Therefore an e-mail project between a German class and a US class could help to answer the questions and to remove prejudices of both sides concerning the National Socialism. This paper presents an idea for a Transatlantic E-mail exchange about the National Socialism on the example of the movie The Wave. Both classes use the movie as the basis for their discussions with the task to find out if a dictatorship like the one of Hitler is possible in our times. The project should last 6 weeks in which the students work with the e-mails twice a week and for each transaction with the other side have different tasks. At the end a reader should be produced with the discoveries the different groups made.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,7, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Anglistisch/Amerikanistisches Institut), course: Hauptseminar: King Arthur, language: English, abstract: David Lodge was born 1935 in South London as the child of a Jewish father and a Catholic mother. He was raised in the middle class and went to Catholic schools. With the age of 22 he became postgraduate student for English literature at the University college of London. In 1960 he became a lecturer at the Birmingham University and published his first novel The Picturegoers. Being a lecturer he discovered the field of literary criticism and wrote his first critical book Language of Fiction. After touring the USA and studying at the Brown University and at Berkeley he was so inspired by travelling and the academic world that he wrote Changing Places. This academic novel about travelling teachers of literature was the first part of a trilogy together with Small World and Nice Work. All three of them were pioneering for modern fiction of the 20th century. For Changing Places David Lodge won the Hawthornden Prize and the Yorkshire Post Fiction Prize. Small World, as well as Nice Work, were shortlisted for the Booker Prize and Nice Work was Sunday Express Book of the year and actually adapted for Television. All three of them showed the academic world in a new light. After World War II more people from middle class went to Universities and the competition between the Universities as well as the scholars became harder. Travelling around the world from conference to conference was on the day¿s schedule of every scholar. David Lodge used this milieu and mixed it with humour and sarcasm and so innovated fiction writing of today. This paper is about David Lodge¿s Small World and its linking to the King Arthur myth especially to the knight Perceval and the Holy Grail. The connection between the novel and the legend results from David Lodge¿s knowledge of both, the academic world and the medieval literature. He mixed them so to create a modern version of Perceval¿s quest for the Holy Grail.
