Boken består av 4 noveller: Bestemødrene, Victoria og familien Staveney, Grunnen til det, og Et kjærlighetsbarn. Den første handler om to bestemødre som forelsker seg i hverandres unge sønner. I den andre fortellingen får en mørkhudet kvinne et barn med sønnen i en liberal middelklassefamilie. Den lille datteren hennes blir gradvis oppslukt av den hvite familiens livsførsel. I den tredje handler det om en eldgammel kultur som oppstår, blomstrer og faller sammen. I den siste fortellingen møter vi en soldat som under den andre verdenskrigen, blir forelsket i løpet av en lang sjøreise til India.
