The Moravians were some of the first missionaries of modern times to heed the call and GO! Saved under the leadership of visionary Count Zinzendorf in Germany, the Moravians kindled a revival that lasted for over a hunderd years. During that time, men and women heard the call to bring the gospel into unknown lands before any other group would dare to go. This book is a foundational work describing the first efforts to bring the gospel to the inuit people of the far North. As such it is an important document. It is a window into culture, describing the Inuit people of Laborador as they were before European influence. But perhaps most importantly, it is a view into the spiritual birth of the people. It carries the initial spiritual keys to a people in history, and shows a people group first standing up to grasp their spiritual destiny.

These collected essays by Sherman Kent were edited by Donald P. Steury and published in 1994 by the History Staff of the Center for the Study of Intelligence, Central Intelligence Agency, Washington D.C. Kent was chairman of the Board of National Estimates from 1952 - 1967 and these declassified essays represent the essence of his thinking on estimate preparation as well as important historical background on the methodology used before and during his tenure. The foreword is by J. Kenneth McDonald, then (1994) chief of the CIA History Staff and the text includes some security-related redactions. This book, long out of print, is a foundational text in the study of intelligence analysis. For the general non-fiction reading public, Kent's illustrative anecdotes about De Gaulle, Bedell Smith, Dean Acheson, etc., offer color and interest, as does his "lessons learned" essay on analysis failure in predicting Soviet missile deliveries to Cuba.

Publishing essays in the age of the tweet is a bit like selling buggywhips next to the car dealership. One would only expect such an activity to be pursued by old fuddy-duddies waving their canes at the kids on their lawns. We are actually huge proponents of social media. The restrictions of 140 characters have brought soul back to wit, and created surprisingly elegant moments of poignancy in the decade since first we tweeted. Still, sometimes, after consuming a cascade of snappy one-liners and cat gifs, one begins to feel as if one's brain hasn't really eaten anything. Like a salad with only salad in it. We crave mental meat. Intellectual protein, to fortify and nourish. We wonder what the incredibly smart and entertaining people we know online would say if they had more space to stretch out, and paid no heed to tl;dr conventions. Consider the songwriting clubs run by people like Matt the Electrician and Bob Schneider. Throw out a title, and by the end of the week, everyone on the list has to have written a song with that title. Why not do the same with prose? The 900-word limit of the essay form is ideal, both for management and digestion.And so, defying the times yet again, this book-form compilation endeavors to extend the lifespan of these compositions beyond their usual expiration date in the ephemerality of the digital ether. And given the momentous times we live in, we hope this may additionally serve as a kind of historical record, alerting future generations to the fact that not all of us who lived in 2016 were completely bugnuts insane.

Among the chapters is the story of the Lower Ninth Ward's struggle to rebuild, the environmentally concerned salvage business in New Orleans the "Green Project," the efforts of Vietnamese communities to respond to yet again another devastating series of events. We also make use of a unique set of data to analyze the socio-economic struggle to rebuild in the face of the Great Recession, the BP oil spill and attempts by powerful forces to stunt that regrowth.Based on years of work by the authors to conduct interviews with the people in the front lines, many of those interviews available with audio files embedded in the book, this is a story that needs to be told to understand one of the greatest disasters to hit the U.S. and to be prepared for the next "big one."
