The work now before us is of the utmost importance, and will call forth the talent and genius of each pupil. If we look into the dictionary for the definition of the word paraphrasing we find the following: -- " Paraphrase -- A re-statement of a text, passage, or word, expressing the meaning of the original in an other form, generally for the sake of its clearer and fuller exposition; a setting forth in other and more ample terms; a free translation into the same or another language: " 'In paraphrase, or translation with latitude, the author's words are not so strictly followed as his sense.' Dryden." It is the latter definition which we prefer, or in short a free translation. In Oral Translations the exact thoughts were reproduced with a minuteness that is not employed in the present work. By this time the pupil ought -to have a command over language that will enable him to find the means of expression very readily and very effectively.
