"The First Book of the Faerie Queene" by Edmund Spenser is an epic poem that stands as a cornerstone in English Renaissance literature. This allegorical masterpiece follows the adventures of the Redcrosse Knight and his quest to free Una from the clutches of the dragon. Spenser employs rich, archaic language and intricate verse forms, creating a poetic tapestry that intertwines themes of chivalry, virtue, and the complex interplay between the allegorical and the historical. As the knight encounters various challenges and adversaries, each episode serves as an allegory for moral and spiritual trials. The poem also acts as a celebration of Queen Elizabeth I, drawing parallels between her reign and the legendary Gloriana, the Faerie Queene. In this first book, Spenser lays the foundation for the overarching narrative, presenting a vivid and enchanting world filled with knights, damsels, and mythical creatures. The Faerie Queene serves as a poetic exploration of the virtues and vices that shape human existence, making it a timeless work that continues to captivate readers with its intricate allegory and poetic brilliance. Immerse yourself in the enchanting realm of Spenser's Faerie Queene, where each stanza unfolds a tale of valor and virtue in the quest for the idealized chivalric life.

The Faerie Queene is Edmund Spenser's magnum opus, composed for Queen Elizabeth I. The epic poem is incomplete, as only six of the intended twelve books were published before the poet's death. Despite that, it stands as one of the longest poems in the English language.Spenser used Aristotle's list of virtues as the foundation for his work. Each of the six books follows a different knight who symbolize a unique virtue: the Knight of the Redcross for Holiness, Guyon for Temperance, Britomartis for Chastity, Cambell and Telamond for Friendship, Artegall for Justice, and Calidore for Courtesy. Fragments of an unfinished seventh book-the "Cantos of Mutability"-would have centered on the virtue of Constancy. In a letter to Sir Walter Raleigh, Spenser reveals that King Arthur represents the virtue of Magnificence, "the perfection of all the rest."The poem opens with the Redcross Knight on a quest ordered by Queen Gloriana to defeat a horrible dragon. Traveling with him is Lady Una and her dwarf servant, who are leading the knight to the land where the dragon dwells. A terrible storm forces the travelers to shelter in the nearest cave-and a monster's den.Just as charming and edifying now as it was when first published in 1590, The Faerie Queen is a masterpiece of fantastic literature that continues to enchant readers all over the world.

AT LAST! An edition of the finest epic poem in British literature printed in Modern Spelling that the student can read easily! A tale of a young knight fighting for his queen, his faith, and his love against cruel monsters and evil magicians written by EDMUND SPENSER. The most enticing work of FANTASY literature from the Elizabethan age - - The FAIRY QUEEN - - with translations of archaic words at the end of the lines and footnotes to explain allusions and obscure sentences. Illustrated by the celebrated artist, WALTER CRANE, and enhanced with critical essays by distinguished scholars. A MUST READ for fans of great literature. The purpose of this scholastic edition of Book I of The Fairy Queen is to offer students a version of Spenser's great opus that they can read easily. Therefore this edition of the epic modernizes the spelling (which has little impact on the end rhyme), offers a synonym for archaic words at the line's end, and provides footnotes to illuminate the murky parts. A brief summary at the start of each canto points the student in the proper direction, and short selections by critics at the end of the book help the reader to interpret the deeper message. The New Folger Library editions of Shakespeare's plays offer students these same aids without destroying the artistry of the plays. Hopefully, this edition will do the same with The Fairy Queen.

EDMUND SPENSER: AMORETTI The Amoretti by Edmund Spenser (c. 1552-99), published in 1595, is one of the great Elizabethan cycles of love poetry. The Amoretti cycle of poems is printed here in full, with each sonnet on its own on a page. This is beautiful poetry, poems of love, full of Edmund Spenser's delicate and intricate way with words. The Amoretti are packed of vivid imagery, of the natural world, of the seasons, of suns and moons, of days and nights - this is love poetry at its most refined and intelligent. Technically, Edmund Spenser knew everything about poetry. He wrote many sonnets (including the Amoretti), and in his The Faerie Queene he composed hundreds of nine-line stanzas. There is a stately progress to Spenser's poesie: he did not rush things. He took his time. William Wordsworth spoke of the 'Sweet Spenser, moving through his clouded heaven with the moon's beauty and the moon's soft pace'. In the Amoretti, is cycle of love sonnets, Spenser tackled his target, his beloved, from many directions. Spenser is unsurpassed in the art of poetic exaltation - no other poet of the era - and of subsequent or previous eras - can top Spenser's sense of the superlative and the exalted. Spenser's poetry is a litany of paeans: 'Epithalamion', 'A Hymn in Honour of Love', 'A Hymn in Honour of Beauty', 'A Hymn of Heavenly Beauty', 'A Hymn of Heavenly Love', 'Prothalamion', 'The Calendar' and of course The Faerie Queene all contain passages of lyrical praise. As with William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser's view of the world was crystallized in his poetry is an expansive, dramatic, encyclopaedic vision. The sheer amount of work by Spenser - the copious letters, 'Complaints', 'Hymns', sonnets, and stanzas in The Faerie Queene - attest to his love of writing. The length of The Faerie Queene is not the least astonishing thing about it. Spenser clearly had a lot to say, and would not stop until he had said it. With bibliography and new illustrations.
