Die vorliegende Schrift wurde von mir in ihrer ersten Gestalt im Jahre 1891 verfaßt, als eine Einleitung zu der damals von der Buchhandlung ¿Vorwärts¿ veranstalteten Sammelausgabe von Reden und Schriften Lassalles. Der Umstand, daß ich zu jener Zeit noch in London lebte, dessen Bibliotheken nur Teile der Lassalle-Literatur darboten, und daß aus buchhändlerischen Gründen die Ausarbeitung der Schrift in einer ziemlich kurz bemessenen Frist geschehen mußte, hatte verschiedene Mängel zur Folge, die ich später oft bedauert habe.Daß nun eine Neuausgabe notwendig geworden ist, hat mir die ersehnte Gelegenheit geboten, hier zu bessern, was nach meiner eigenen Überzeugung und dem Urteil der von mir als berechtigt anerkannten Kritik vornehmlich zu bessern war. Insbesondere aber sind die in der Zwischenzeit erschienenen, teilweise recht bedeutsamen Briefe von, an und über Lassalle berücksichtigt worden, die dazu beigetragen haben, das Bild des großen Lehrers und Kämpfers ganz wesentlich einheitlicher zu gestalten, als es früher vor uns stand.Lassalle als Vorkämpfer zu würdigen war die besondere Aufgabe der Schrift. Von einem Mitglied der Partei, die in Lassalle einen ihrer Begründer verehrt, für die Partei, also namentlich auch für bildungsdürstige Arbeiter geschrieben, hatte sie das Hauptgewicht darauf zu legen, die Bedeutung Lassalles als Lehrer und Führer der von ihm 1863 neu ins Leben gerufenen Partei in möglichster Klarheit zur Anschauung zu bringen. Das hatte insofern eine gewisse Beschränkung zur Folge, als das literarhistorische Moment ziemlich zurücktreten mußte. Die Schrift beansprucht nicht, mit Arbeiten zu rivalisieren, die Lassalle von der Warte des außenstehenden Geschichtsschreibers oder Literaturpsychologen behandeln. Aber dafür glaubt sie dasjenige Moment um so heller zur Erkenntnis zu bringen, das gerade in unseren Tagen im Vordergrund des Interesses steht und an dem Lassalle am meisten gelegen war: sein Wollen und Wirken als bahnbrechender Lehrer des Sozialismus und als politischer Führer der sozialistischen Demokratie.
