Il Cristianesimo avea presa l'indole delle nazioni presso le quali a mano a mano allignò. I nativi della Sorìa e dell'Egitto all'indolenza di una divozione contemplativa si abbandonavano: Roma cristiana volea tuttavia governar l'Universo; mentre, discussioni di teologia metafisica, occupavano lo spirito e la loquacità de' popoli della Grecia. In vece di adorar silenziosi gl'incomprensibili misteri della Trinità, o della Incarnazione, si diedero ad agitare con calore sottili controversie che dilatarono la loro Fede, a scapito forse della carità, e della ragione .

Sotto i deplorabili regni di Valeriano e di Gallieno, l'Impero fu oppresso e quasi distrutto dai Soldati, dai Tiranni e dai Barbari. Lo salvò una serie di gran Principi, che traevano un'oscura origine dalle marziali province dell'Illirico. Nel giro di quasi trenta anni Claudio, Aureliano, Probo, Diocleziano, ed i suoi colleghi trionfarono degli stranieri e de' domestici nemici dello Stato; ristabilirono la militar disciplina, la forza delle frontiere, e meritarono il glorioso titolo di Ristauratori del Mondo Romano. La caduta di un effemminato tiranno aprì la strada ad una successione di Eroi.

Con Teodosio spirò il genio di Roma, poichè fu esso l'ultimo dei successori d'Augusto e di Costantino, che conducesse in campo gli eserciti e vedesse la sua autorità riconosciuta per tutta l'estensione dell'Impero. La memoria però delle sue virtù continuò tuttavia a difendere la debole ed inesperta età dei suoi figli. Dopo la morte del padre, Arcadio ed Onorio furono per unanime consenso del Mondo salutati come Imperatori legittimi dell'Oriente e dell'Occidente; fu ardentemente preso il giuramento di fedeltà da ogni ordine dello Stato, dai Senati dell'antica e della nuova Roma, dal Clero, dai Magistrati, da' Soldati e dal Popolo.
