Edward John Trelawny kam am 13. November 1792 in London zurWelt. Der Vater, Charles Brereton, war Oberstleutnant und Mitglieddes Unterhauses, die Mutter Spanierin. Nach rudimentärer Schulbildung kam Trelawny mit nicht ganz 13 Jahren zur Marine, später zurSeeschule und ging dann auf ein nach Ostindien bestimmtes Kriegsschiff, von dem er in Bombay davongelaufen ist. Vermutlich hat erdann auf einem Kaperschiff in den indischen und malaiischen Meerenangeheuert.Nach einer zwischenzeitlichen Rückkehr nach England brach er 1820zu Reisen nach Italien und Griechenland auf. Hier lernte er Byron undShelley kennen und nahm später mit Byron an dem Freiheitskampf derGriechen teil. Auf der griechischen Insel Cephalonia trennte Trelawnysich von Byron, schloß sich dem Freischärler Odysseus Androutsos anund unterstützte ihn im Banden- und Kleinkrieg gegen die türkischeHerrschaft.Nach abenteuerlichen Jahren und einer schweren Schußverletzungkehrte er 1835 endgültig nach England zurück und ließ sich auf einemkleinen walisischen Landgut nieder, wo er sich mit Leidenschaft undErfolg der Landwirtschaft widmete. Trelawny war dreimal verheiratet,dreimal von seinen Ehefrauen getrennt und hatte drei Kinder, für dieer Zeit seines Lebens gut gesorgt hat.»Ich war Pirat«ist ein spannender Abenteuer- und Seeroman mit autobiographischenZügen. Über sein Buch sagt der Autor: »... daß in dem ausdrücklichfür Männer geschriebnen Buch nichts geglättet oder fortgelassen werden dürfe.« Das Werk gehört seit seinem ersten Erscheinen 1831 zuden anerkannten Klassikern Englands.

The biographer and novelist E. J. Trelawny (1792-1881) published Recollections in 1858. It is a memoir of the time Trelawny spent in the Mediterranean with the Romantic poets Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) and Lord Byron (1788-1824) from 1822 until the early deaths of both poets. Trelawny's vivid and personal account quickly became popular, comfortably out-selling other biographies, and was republished in 1878 under the title Records of Shelley, Byron and the Author. The work, based on Trelawny's notes and correspondence, describes their expatriate lifestyle in Italy, Shelley's sudden tragic death at sea, Byron's support for the Greek War of Independence, and his death. It is an indispensable source about the final months of Shelley and Byron's intense and unconventional lives, providing eye-witness details and intimate knowledge of two of England's greatest Romantic poets.
