This book discusses the environment in Rivers State of the oil-rich Niger Delta in the context of ¿One Global Environment¿ and mankind¿s ¿Common Future¿. It examines the 2011 UNEP Report on Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland alongside human and environmental rights abuses in the Niger Delta and recommends formal institutionalisation of Strategic Environmental Assessment and overall Strategic Assessment to boost effective implementation of policies, plans and programmes, besides environmental governance and human wellbeing in Ogoniland and other parts of the Niger Delta and Nigeria. It stresses that good governance (GG) and sustainable development (SD) are interwoven, and thus underscores the need for GG to transform Nigeriäs prevailing ¿resource curse¿ into a blessing and soft law modes of conduct and practices into hard SD-oriented laws and practices, based on emerging UN-led global standards and practices. The book is relevant to the oil-rich Niger Delta, Nigeria at large (especially her statesmen and government regulatory organs), public-spirited individuals and groups, extractive industrial operations¿ interest groups, policymakers, scholars and students around the globe.

Ce livre traite de l'environnement dans l'état du delta du Niger, riche en pétrole, dans le contexte de "Un environnement mondial" et de "l'avenir commun" de l'humanité. Il examine le rapport 2011 du PNUE sur l'évaluation environnementale de l'Ogoniland ainsi que les violations des droits de l'homme et de l'environnement dans le delta du Niger et recommande l'institutionnalisation formelle de l'évaluation environnementale stratégique et de l'évaluation stratégique globale pour stimuler la mise en ¿uvre efficace des politiques, plans et programmes, outre la gouvernance environnementale et le bien-être humain dans l'Ogoniland et d'autres parties du delta du Niger et du Nigeria. Il souligne que la bonne gouvernance (GG) et le développement durable (DD) sont étroitement liés, et souligne donc la nécessité pour la GG de transformer la "malédiction des ressources" qui prévaut au Nigeria en une bénédiction, et les modes de conduite et pratiques de droit non contraignant en lois et pratiques dures axées sur le DD, basées sur les nouvelles normes et pratiques mondiales dirigées par les Nations unies.
