In the Introduction, Aleister Crowley, who translated the book, called it the masterpiece of Levi. The author, Eliphas Levi, reveals how to use the most hidden of occult secrets to reach the highest order of the human mind. The author has determined that the key to the world's mysteries resides on a higher plane that can only be accessed by reconciling the contradictions found in the dualism of reality. The methods used to accomplish this are explained as being this key. One may discover in this book the absolute knowledge of good and evil, why alchemy is the daughter of the Qabalah, secrets of life and death, the astral world, and the deeper mysteries of religion, including the Christian Cross. It also covers the use of Spiritualism, the Tarot, mesmerism, mediumship, magnetic powers, and various forms of magic that may be used to invoke either angels or demons. Eliphas Levi is legendary in the field of the occult, transcendental magic and the hidden world. If this book is indeed his masterpiece, it should leave no question in the minds of readers regarding its ability to live up to its title - the key of the mysteries.

It includes the "Magic Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum", some extracts from the "Major Keys and the Clavicles of Solomon" and the Editor's Appendix is a large collection of Levi's drawings and diagrams for easy reference. "The science of signs begins with the science of letters. Letters are absolute ideas. Absolute ideas are numbers. Numbers are perfect signs. In using ideas with numbers, one can operate upon the ideas like one can operate upon number and arrive at the mathematics of truth. The tarot is the key of letters and numbers..." "Now, the tarot that we have today ... has come to us from Egypt passing through Judea. The keys of this tarot, in fact, correspond with the letters of the hebraic alphabet, and some of its figures even reproduce the same form of the characters of this sacred alphabet."

Born Alphonse Louis Constant, French magician Eliphas Levi (1810-75) wrote prolifically on the occult sciences. His hugely popular Dogme et rituel de la haute magie, published in French in 1854, was translated into English by Arthur Edward Waite (1857-1942) in 1896. In the present work, Waite condenses Levi's two volumes into one. The first part outlines Levi's theory of the doctrine of transcendent magic and discusses a wide range of magical phenomena, including bewitchment, Kabbalah and alchemy. The second part focuses on the practical aspects of ritual and ceremony in Western occult philosophy. Waite, a mystic and occult historian, edited several alchemical and magical texts for publication in the wake of the mid-nineteenth century occult revival. His translation is accompanied by a preface outlining Levi's colourful career. The original two-volume French edition is also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection.

First published in 1860, Eliphas Levi's history of magic follows in the wake of his enormously successful Dogme et Ritual de la Haute Magie, which first appeared in 1854. In this book, the French occultist and alleged magician offers a thoroughly comprehensive survey of the idea of 'magic' in Western history, from its origins in Indian, Greek, cabalistic and hermetic traditions to the latest developments in nineteenth-century occult philosophy, as well as his own private recollections of his experience with magic. Levi is adamant in his treatment of magic as a serious science and one compatible with Christianity, encouraging his readers to see magic as the reconciliation point between faith and reason, science and belief, authority and liberty. Extending to almost six hundred pages and with numerous illustrations, this book should appeal to those interested in the nineteenth-century obsession with mysticism and the occult.
