It was first published as a series of articles in the magazine Household Words before being turned into a book with the working title Cranford and being on sale in 1853. She also authored Ruth, a three-volume book that was published in January 1853, during this time. The eight different titles were originally issued for the episodes that were discussed in Cranford.
