Begun in the autumn of 1957 and published posthumously in 1964, Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast is an entertaining memoir of his years in Paris (1921-26) before he was famous. It captures what it meant to be young and poor and writing in Paris during the 1920s. A correspondent for the Toronto Star, Hemingway arrived in Paris in 1921, three years after the trauma of the Great War and at the beginning of the transformation of Europe's cultural landscape: Braque and Picasso were experimenting with cubist form; James Joyce, long living in self-imposed exile from his native Dublin, had just completed Ulysses; Gertrude Stein held court at 27 Rue de Fleurus, and deemed young Ernest a member of une generation perdue; and T.S. Eliot was a bank clerk in London. It was during these years that the as-of-yet unpublished young writer gathered the material for his first novel The Sun Also Rises, and the subsequent masterpieces that followed.

Ernest Hemingway's mark on American literature cannot be overstated. Under the modernist poet Ezra Pound's mentorship, Hemingway's early writings show him developing his unique style of sparse, objective prose. With the success of his first novel, The Sun Also Rises, this style established him as the leading writer of the Lost Generation. He would go on to become a literary giant and celebrity, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. A Farewell to Arms is a novel by American writer Ernest Hemingway, set during the Italian campaign of World War I. First published in 1929, it is a first-person account of an American, Frederic Henry, serving as a lieutenant ("tenente") in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army. The title is taken from a poem by the 16th-century English dramatist George Peele.The novel, set against the backdrop of World War I, describes a love affair between the expatriate Henry and an English nurse, Catherine Barkley. Finally, in January 1926, Max Perkins at Scribner's agreed to publish The Torrents of Spring in addition to Hemingway's future work.
