Avançant de manière argumentée, Renan conteste le rôle central attribué implicitement à la religion musulmane dans le développement scientifique du monde arabe au Moyen-Âge : "Cette civilisation musulmane a été autrefois très brillante. Elle a eu des savants, des philosophes. Elle a été, pendant des siècles, la maîtresse de l'Occident chrétien. Pourquoi ce qui a été ne serait-il pas encore ? Voilà le point précis sur lequel je voudrais faire porter le débat. Y a-t-il eu réellement une science musulmane, ou du moins une science admise par l'islam, tolérée par l'islam ?"
