Malgré l'abondance de la littérature et des discussions sur la gestion de la chaîne d'approvisionnement (SCM), il n'est pas simple de comprendre comment la SCM concrète est mise en ¿uvre et pratiquée. À partir de l'examen de quelques manuels importants de SCM, cette étude compose d'abord un groupe d'activités et de tâches de gestion simples qui peuvent être théoriquement considérées comme essentielles pour la SCM. Ensuite, on étudie empiriquement le rôle managérial et hiérarchique des fonctions et des cadres SCM au sein d'un échantillon d'entreprises italiennes. La recherche révèle que la présence de rôles officiellement dédiés à la SCM n'est pas courante parmi les entreprises italiennes. Cependant, dans les entreprises où existent des postes de SCM formels, leur rôle hiérarchique et l'étendue de leur contrôle suggèrent que les conditions d'une mise en ¿uvre stratégique et de la pratique du SCM pourraient être trouvées. Les responsabilités managériales observées dans la réalité semblent en moyenne cohérentes avec les activités et tâches SCM identifiées avec la revue théorique. Néanmoins, les managers et fonctions interrogés semblent plus impliqués dans la gestion des opérations SCM amont et interne, et moins responsables des activités SCM aval.

Rozpoczynaj¿c od przegl¿du kilku znanych podr¿czników SCM, badanie to najpierw ¿¿czy grup¿ zwyk¿ych dziää i zadä kierowniczych, które teoretycznie mo¿na uznä za kluczowe dla SCM. Nast¿pnie zbadano empirycznie, jak¿ rol¿ kierownicz¿ i hierarchiczn¿ odgrywaj¿ funkcje i kierownictwo SCM w próbie w¿oskich firm. Badania pokazuj¿, ¿e obecno¿¿ ról oficjalnie dedykowanych SCM nie jest powszechna w¿ród w¿oskich firm. Jednak w firmach, w których istniej¿ formalne stanowiska SCM, ich hierarchiczna rola i zakres kontroli sugeruj¿, ¿e mo¿na znale¿¿ warunki do strategicznego wdro¿enia i praktyki SCM. Obowi¿zki kierownicze obserwowane w rzeczywisto¿ci wydaj¿ si¿ ¿rednio zgodne z dziäaniami i zadaniami SCM zidentyfikowanymi w przegl¿dzie teoretycznym. Niemniej jednak badani mened¿erowie i funkcje wydaj¿ si¿ by¿ bardziej zaangäowani w zarz¿dzanie operacjami SCM wy¿szego szczebla i wewn¿trznymi, a mniej odpowiedzialni za dalsze dziäania SCM.

Despite abundant literature and discussion about supply chain management (SCM), it is not straightforward to realize how in concrete SCM is implemented and practiced. Starting from the review of a few prominent SCM manuals, this study first compounds a group of down-to-hearth managerial activities and tasks that can be theoretically considered core for SCM. Next, it is empirically investigated what managerial and hierarchical role SCM functions and executives play within a sample of Italian companies. The research reveals that the presence of roles officially dedicated to SCM is not common among Italian firms. However, in those companies where formal SCM positions exist, their hierarchical role and span of control suggest that the conditions for a strategic implementation and practice of SCM might be found. The managerial responsibilities observed in reality on average appear consistent with the SCM activities and tasks identified with the theoretic review. Nevertheless, the managers and functions surveyed seem more involved in the management of upstream and internal SCM operations, and less responsible for downstream SCM activities.
