Ferdinand Holthausens kurzgefaßtes und erschwingliches ,Gotisches etymologisches Wörterbuch' von 1934 hat auch heute noch in Studium und Forschung seinen Platz. Die zweiten Teile von Composita sind als besondere Wörter verzeichnet, Präfixe besonders aufgeführt. Zusätzlich aufgenommen sind Eigennamen und die im Romanischen enthaltenen gotischen Wörter, sofern sie noch nicht im Bibeltext und der Skeireins erthalten sind.Für die Erklärung der gotischen Wörter wurden nur solche Etymologien herangezogen, die als ganz sicher oder mindestens höchst wahrscheinlich angesehen werden können. Aus den älteren und neueren germanischen Dialekten konnten viele bis dahin übersehene Entsprechungen verzeichnet werden.
