Le tre parole sono: date, dite, aggiudicate.

Beoni lustrissimi, e voi Impestati pregiatissimi (poiché a voi non ad altri dedico i miei scritti) Alcibiade nel dialogo di Platone intitolato il Simposio, lodando Socrate, suo precettore e, senza contrasto, principe de' filosofi, dice tra l'altro ch'egli era simile ai sileni. Per sileni s'intendeva una volta certe scatolette, quali vediamo ora nelle botteghe degli speziali, dipinte di figure allegre e frivole come arpie, satiri, ochette imbrigliate, lepri colle corna, anitre col basto, caproni volanti, cervi aggiogati ed altrettali immagini deformate a capriccio per eccitare il riso, quale fu Sileno, maestro del buon Bacco.

Oh bevitori infaticabili, e voi, impestati preziosissimi, mentre avete tempo da perdere ed io non ho altro di più urgente tra mano, vi domando domandando: Perché corre oggi questo modo di dire proverbiale: Le monde n'est plus fat? Fat è un vocabolo di Linguadoca e significa non salato, senza sale, insipido, sciatto; per metafora significa folle, sciocco, sprovvisto di buon senso, sventato di cervello. Vorreste voi dire, come infatti si può logicamente inferire, che per lo innanzi il mondo sarebbe stato sciocco e ora sarebbe divenuto savio? Per quante e quali condizioni era sciocco? Quante e quali condizioni erano richieste a rinsavirlo? Perché era sciocco? Perché sarebbe ora savio?

Non sarà inutile né ozioso, poiché abbiam tempo, mentovare la prima fonte e origine onde ci è nato il buon Pantagruele. Vedo infatti che così han trattato le loro croniche, tutti i buoni storiografi, non solamente, Arabi, Barbari, Latini e Greci, ma anche gli autori della Santa Scrittura come Monsignor San Luca e parimenti San Matteo. Vi convien prender nota dunque che, al principio del mondo (parlo di tempi molto lontani, or sono piú di quaranta quarantine di notti per contare al modo degli antichi Druidi) poco dopo che Abele fu ucciso dal fratello Caino, la terra, imbevuta del sangue del giusto...

Band (mit dem Ersten und Zweiten Buch) von Gargantua und Pantagruel erzählt u. a. von der Geburt und Erziehung Pantagruels, Kriegszügen und Abenteuern, Gründung der utopischen Abtei Thelem und der Devise »Tu, was dir gefällt«.Die Gesamtedition, von insgesamt drei Bänden der vollständigen Ausgabe, fußt auf der stupender Übertragung von Regis, musste aber freilich vom Herausgeber lesbar gemacht werden, was Orthographie, Zeichensetzung, kaum bekannte und unbekannte Termini sowie sprachliche Neuschöpfungen sowohl von Rabelais als auch Regis betrifft, immer geleitet vom strengen Vorsatz, Schwächen zu eliminieren, ohne Zauber und Essenz anzutasten, so wenig Eingriffe wie irgend möglich, nur so viele wie unbedingt nötig! Die deutsche Übersetzung wurde mit dem französischen Originaltext abgeglichen, und zum besseren Verständnis des Lesers hat der Herausgeber, Joerg K. Sommermeyer, dem Text zahlreiche Anmerkungen und Worterläuterungen beigefügt.
