Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) was an American politician and the fourteenth President of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. He is to date the only president from New Hampshire and was the first president born in the nineteenth century. Pierce was a Democrat and a "doughface" (a Northerner with Southern sympathies) who served in the U. S. House of Representatives and Senate. Later, Pierce took part in the Mexican-American War and became a brigadier general. His private law practice in his home state, New Hampshire, was so successful that he was offered several important positions, which he turned down. Later, he was nominated for president as a dark horse candidate on the 49th ballot at the 1852 Democratic National Convention.

The book ""State of the Union Addresses"" by Franklin Pierce is a collection of speeches delivered by the 14th President of the United States to Congress during his term in office from 1853 to 1857. The speeches cover a wide range of topics, including foreign relations, territorial expansion, slavery, and economic policy. Pierce's addresses reflect the political climate of the mid-19th century, as the nation was on the brink of civil war and tensions between North and South were escalating. The book provides insight into Pierce's political philosophy and his views on the issues of his time. It is a valuable resource for scholars and students of American history, politics, and government. Some European powers have regarded with disquieting concern the territorial expansion of the United States. This rapid growth has resulted from the legitimate exercise of sovereign rights belonging alike to all nations, and by many liberally exercised. Under such circumstances it could hardly have been expected that those among them which have within a comparatively recent period subdued and absorbed ancient kingdoms, planted their standards on every continent, and now possess or claim the control of the islands of every ocean as their appropriate domain would look with unfriendly sentiments upon the acquisitions of this country, in every instance honorably obtained, or would feel themselves justified in imputing our advancement to a spirit of aggression or to a passion for political predominance. Our foreign commerce has reached a magnitude and extent nearly equal to that of the first maritime power of the earth, and exceeding that of any other. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
