In den Jahren 1844 und 1849 veröffentlichten der Schwede Gunnar Olof Hyltén-Cavallius und der Engländer George Stephens in Stockholm gemeinsam in zwei "Heften" ihre eigentlich nur als 1. Band gedachte Sammlung "Svenska Folksagor och Äfventyr". Bereits 1848 erschien in Wien unter dem unzutreffenden Titel "Schwedische Volkssagen und Märchen" (das Werk enthält keinerlei Sagen, sondern ausschließlich Märchen) eine sehr fehlerhafte deutsche Übersetzung des 1. Heftes, die auch heute noch bzw. wieder im Handel ist. Diese Fehlerhaftigkeit sowie das anscheinende Fehlen einer deutschen Version des 2. Heftes waren der Anlass für die nunmehr vorgelegte deutsche Gesamtausgabe der "Schwedischen Märchen". Bei jedem Märchen - auch in den Kurzfassungen - ist genau angegeben, in welcher damaligen Provinz Schwedens es aufgezeichnet worden ist.
