Erneut allein, beschließt der Jüngling, sein Herz zu erleichtern, indem er das Gedicht Die erste Liebe verfasst und seinen Gemütszustand in einem nicht zur Veröffentlichung gedachten Tagebuch genauestens dokumentiert. Der melancholische Jüngling versenkt sich in seine ständig aufwallenden und abebbenden Gefühle, beobachtet seinen schwindenden Appetit, seinen Ekel vor den Affekten der anderen, der ihn von der sonst so geliebten Lektüre fernhält. Er schwankt zwischen hilflosem Staunen über die neuen Empfindungen und abgeklärter Bewusstheit. Dabei verzichtet Leopardi auf die herkömmlichen Bilder, die das Verliebtsein beschreiben, und widmet sich allein seinen eigenen Erfahrungen.Indem Leopardi weniger seine Geliebte beschreibt als das Verliebtsein, erinnert er mit seinem Tagebuch der ersten Liebe nicht nur sich selbst, sondern auch seine Leser an dieses große Aufflammen der Gefühle. Nach den lieblichen >Schmetterlingen im Bauch< sucht man allerdings vergeblich - es sind die »Eingeweide der Liebe«, die Giacomo vor uns ausbreitet.

Leopardis Operette morali gelten in Italien seit ihrem ersten Erscheinen 1827 als Musterbeispiel einer satirisch-philosophischen Prosakunst mit poetischer Grundierung: originelle Fabeln, Szenen über das Schicksal des Menschengeschlechts in seinen "Irrungen und Wirrungen" - eine erzählende Philosophie, die Nietzsches Also sprach Zarathustra vergleichbar ist: anregende, von Geist und Witz nur so sprühende und melancholisch-heitere, meist dialogische Stücke in einer leichten und melodischen Prosa. Den Titel Operette morali (wörtlich: Moralische Werkchen) hat der Übersetzer latinisiert, da Leopardi an Plutarchs Moralia gedacht hat, Kroeber auch an Adornos Minima Moralia. Die Übersetzung ist mit erläuternden Anmerkungen und einem Nachwort von Burkhart Kroeber versehen. Ergänzt wird sie durch einen Essay von Paul Heyse über Leopardis Weltanschauung.

Giacomo Leopardi (Recanati June 29, 1798 - Naples June 14, 1837) was an Italian poet, essayist, philosopher, and philologist. He is considered one of the greatest poets of the 19th century. Even if he lived in a secluded town in the ultra-conservative Papal States, he came in touch with the main thoughts of the Enlightenment, and, by his own literary evolution, created a remarkable, renowned and pessimist poetic work, related to the Romantic era.
