    Kaum hatte Puccini im Jahre 1900 die Arbeit an der Tosca zu Ende gebracht und deren erste Vorstellungen miterlebt, als in London bei einem Theaterbesuch ein möglicher neuer Opernstoff seine Aufmerksamkeit erregte: gegeben wurde das Bühnenstück "Madame Butterfly.
