Aus dieser Motivation heraus entstand "De mulieribus claris", eine Sammlung von über 100 Porträts berühmter Frauen, die Boccaccio bis zu seinem Tod 1375 immer wieder überarbeitete. Charmant und mit geistreichem Witz stellt Boccaccio starke Frauen wie Minerva, die Göttin der Weisheit, die Prophetin Carmenta, die Malerin Thamaris, die Rednerin Hortensia oder Proba, die Dichterin vor. Nicht immer sin d sie tugendhaft, heilig erst recht nicht, aber ihnen allen ist gemeinsam, dass sie sich durch ihre Tapferkeit, ihre Geisteskräfte und ihre Beharrlichkeit in der Männerwelt durchgesetzt haben - und so sind diese eindrucksvollen Geschichten auch heute noch von großer Aktualität. Für die vorliegende Ausgabe wurden die schönsten Texte ausgewählt und neu übersetzt sowie mit den Holzschnitten der Originalausgabe illustriert.
