It is a great pleasure to share with you the Springer LNCS proceedings of the Second World Summit on the Knowledge Society, WSKS 2009, organized by the Open - search Society, Ngo, http://www.open-knowledge-society.org, and held in Samaria Hotel, in the beautiful city of Chania in Crete, Greece, September 16-18, 2009. The 2nd World Summit on the Knowledge Society (WSKS 2009) was an inter- tional scientific event devoted to promoting dialogue on the main aspects of the knowledge society towards a better world for all. The multidimensional economic and social crisis of the last couple of years has brought to the fore the need to discuss in depth new policies and strategies for a human centric developmental processes in the global context. This annual summit brings together key stakeholders involved in the worldwide development of the knowledge society, from academia, industry, and government, including policy makers and active citizens, to look at the impact and prospects of - formation technology, and the knowledge-based era it is creating, on key facets of l- ing, working, learning, innovating, and collaborating in today's hyper-complex world. The summit provides a distinct, unique forum for cross-disciplinary fertilization of research, favoring the dissemination of research on new scientific ideas relevant to - ternational research agendas such as the EU (FP7), OECD, or UNESCO. We focus on the key aspects of a new sustainable deal for a bold response to the multidimensional crisis of our times.

This volume is the second one of the 16th East-European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems (ADBIS 2012), held on September 18-21, 2012, in Poznan, Poland. The first one has been published in the LNCS series. This volume includes 27 research contributions, selected out of 90. The contributions cover a wide spectrum of topics in the database and information systems field, including: database foundation and theory, data modeling and database design, business process modeling, query optimization in relational and object databases, materialized view selection algorithms, index data structures, distributed systems, system and data integration, semi-structured data and databases, semantic data management, information retrieval, data mining techniques, data stream processing, trust and reputation in the Internet, and social networks. Thus, the content of this volume covers the research areas from fundamentals of databases, through still hot topic research problems (e.g., data mining, XML data processing), to novel research areas (e.g., social networks, trust and reputation, and data stream processing). The editors of this volume believe that its content will inspire the researchers with new ideas for future development. It may also serve as an overview of the ongoing work in the field of databases and information systems.

Datenbanken und Datenbanksysteme sind seit vielen Jahren ein unverzichtbarer Bestandteil in kommerziellen Anwendungen. Egal, ob Online bei Reiseportalen und Shops oder klassisch bei Lohnbuchhaltungen und Kontenverwaltung - ohne Datenbanken im Hintergrund wären diese Dienste nicht realisierbar. Gottfried Vossen behandelt in dieser völlig überarbeiteten Auflage sechs große Bereiche. Im einführenden Teil wird der Aufbau von Datenbanken und Datenbanksystemen beschrieben. Im zweiten Teil geht Vossen auf klassische Konzepte wie das Entity-Relationship-Modell, Datenbankentwurf und das relationale Datenmodell ein. Im Hintergrund moderner Anwendungen laufen inzwischen jedoch zumeist objekt-relationale Datenbanken - die in diesem Kontext relevanten Themen wie XML, XQuery und SQL werden in Teil 3 eingehend behandelt, so dass der nächste Schritt, die Datenintegration, in Teil 4 über Architekturkonzepte, Data Warehouses und OLAP sowie Data Mining verstanden und umgesetzt werden kann. Bevor der Autor einen Einblick in neuere Entwicklungen gibt, geht er in Teil 5 auf Datenbanksystemtechniken ein. Wichtige Schlagworte in diesem Zusammenhang sind Datenbank- und Speicherorganisation, Verarbeitung und Optimierung von Anfragen, physischer Datenbankentwurf und Tuning, Transaktionen und transaktionale Garantien, Concurrency Control und Crash Recovery in zentralisierten sowie verteilten Umgebungen.

Diese Theorie-Einführung hat konsequent praktische Anwendungen im Blick. Seien es Workflow-Systeme, Web Services, Verschlüsselung von Informationen, Authentifizierungsprotokolle oder selbstfahrende Autos ¿ all diese Technologien haben enge Bezüge zu den theoretischen Grundlagen der Informatik. So trägt das Buch dazu bei, dass Studierende die Grundlagen der Theoretischen Informatik nicht nur verstehen, sondern auch anwenden können, um effektiv und produktiv an informationstechnischen Problemlösungen mitwirken zu können.
