This tells the story of Harry Dwight, resident of a fictional town named Rollingdale,set somewhere in the Australian countryside, but close to a large city.Harry makes his living by selling water in a time of extended drought, helped by hisclose friend, Leo the Lump. One of his customers is Mayor Zwoke, prominent local politicianand owner of a pie factory. He requires a regular supply of water, but when it is revealed thathe is cheating Harry, Harry takes steps to disrupt the mayor's garden party by hiring a bunchof porcupines to undercut the lawn where the party is held. The resulting disaster is a hugeembarrassment for the mayor who is in quest for higher office.When he finds out that Dwight caused the mess, he instigates a virtual feud betweenthe two. As the feud develops Harry decides to run for council in order to combat the mayorpolitically. Eventually this leads to some saucy political campaigns and the ridiculous anticstaken by the main characters in order to achieve victory. Much of the book then details themanoeuvrings of the various sides, the campaigns they run and how the mayor humiliatesHarry, only finally to be defeated when Harry wins a seat on council.

O meu livro é sobre esta prática e sobre como a arte que faço, funciona da forma como é destinada. A obra monumentaliza a identidade negra num esforço para espelhar o significado e a resiliência do eu negro dentro das Caraíbas; um espaço que foi criado por europeus para enriquecer os seus respectivos Impérios. Apresento o uso de práticas artísticas canónicas estabelecidas como metodologia para mapear uma cultura à outra como forma de apresentar a narrativa Negra ao espectador Negro.

L'uso dei monumenti come reliquie del futuro per convalidare e preservare l'identità degli afro-caraibici nei Caraibi anglofoni è la premessa per lo sviluppo concettuale e fisico della mia pratica di studio. Il mio libro parla di questa pratica e di come le opere d'arte che realizzo funzionino nel modo in cui sono state concepite. Il lavoro monumentalizza l'identità nera nel tentativo di rispecchiare il significato e la resilienza dell'io nero all'interno dei Caraibi; uno spazio che è stato creato dagli europei per arricchire i rispettivi imperi. Propongo l'uso di pratiche artistiche canoniche consolidate come metodologia per mappare una cultura sull'altra come modo di presentare la narrativa nera allo spettatore nero.

Mon livre traite de cette pratique et de la manière dont les ¿uvres d'art que je réalise fonctionnent comme elles sont censées le faire. L'¿uvre monumentalise l'identité noire dans un effort pour refléter la signification et la résilience du soi noir dans les Caraïbes, un espace créé par les Européens pour enrichir leurs empires respectifs. Je propose l'utilisation de pratiques artistiques canoniques établies comme une méthodologie pour faire correspondre une culture à l'autre, afin de présenter le récit noir au spectateur noir.

Die Verwendung von Denkmälern als zukünftige Relikte zur Bestätigung und Bewahrung der Identität afrokaribischer Menschen in der anglophonen Karibik ist die Prämisse für die konzeptionelle und physische Entwicklung meiner Atelierpraxis. In meinem Buch geht es um diese Praxis und darum, wie die von mir geschaffenen Kunstwerke so funktionieren, wie sie beabsichtigt sind. Die Arbeit monumentalisiert die schwarze Identität in dem Bestreben, die Bedeutung und die Widerstandsfähigkeit des schwarzen Selbst in der Karibik widerzuspiegeln; ein Raum, der von den Europäern geschaffen wurde, um ihre jeweiligen Imperien zu bereichern. Ich benutze die etablierten kanonischen Kunstpraktiken als Methode, um eine Kultur auf die andere zu übertragen und dem schwarzen Betrachter die schwarze Geschichte zu präsentieren.

Early Buddhism flourished because it was able to take up the challenge represented by buoyant economic conditions and the need for cultural uniformity in the newly emergent states in north-eastern India from the fifth century BCE onwards. This book begins with the apparent inconsistency of Buddhism, a renunciant movement, surviving within a strong urban environment, and draws out the implications of this. In spite of the Buddhist ascetic imperative, the Buddha and other celebrated monks moved easily through various levels of society and fitted into the urban landscape they inhabited. The Sociology of Early Buddhism tells how and why the early monks were able to exploit the social and political conditions of mid-first millennium north-eastern India in such a way as to ensure the growth of Buddhism into a major world religion. Its readership lies both within Buddhist studies and more widely among historians, sociologists and anthropologists of religion.
