Author Harriet Robinson (1825-1911), born Harriet Jane Hanson in Boston, offers a first person account of her life as a factory girl in Lowell, Massachusetts in this 1898 work. Robinson moved with her widowed mother and three siblings to Lowell as the cotton industry was booming, and began working as a bobbin duffer at the age of ten for $2 a week. Her reflections of the life, some 60 years later, are unfailingly upbeat. She was educated, in public school, by private lesson, and in church. The community was tightly knit. She also had the opportunity to write poetry and prose for the factory girls' literary magazine The Lowell Offering. When mill girls returned to their rural family homes, she says, "...instead of being looked down upon as 'factory girls,' they were more often welcomed as coming from the metropolis, bringing new fashions, new books, and new ideas with them.

The New Pandora: A Drama is a play written by Harriet Jane Hanson Robinson and published in 1889. The play tells the story of a young woman named Pandora, who is sent to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle in New York City after her parents' death. Pandora is a free-spirited and independent woman who clashes with her conservative relatives and their rigid social norms. As Pandora navigates her new life in the city, she becomes involved in a love triangle with two men: the wealthy and sophisticated Mr. Van Buren and the passionate and artistic Mr. Howard. Pandora must choose between the security and status that Mr. Van Buren can offer her or the love and creativity that Mr. Howard represents.Throughout the play, Robinson explores themes of gender roles, social class, and the tension between tradition and modernity. The New Pandora: A Drama is a compelling and thought-provoking work that offers a glimpse into the social and cultural landscape of late 19th-century America. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
