The coastal environment presents serious problems to land use due to flooding, erosion, pollution, and emerging threat posed by rising sea level. All these require constant monitoring and remedial action in order to preserve man¿s investment. The developments in the field of remote sensing by collecting multi temporal data through earth observing satellites make it possible to monitor the coastal zone effectively. This approach provides cost effective and accurate solution to various coastal management problems. In this study an attempt have been to analyze the changes in the coastal environment in Vasai creek, Mumbai using remotely sensed digital data. The shoreline behavior along the creek also analyzed in order to ascertain the stability of the coast. Water quality assessment using the visual interpretation was carried out and the dispersion of polluted water in the sea was studied. The changes in the land form features were quantified using unsupervised classification technique and which will be vital information for coastal planning for development works and protection works.The coastal environment of Vasai creek between the years Jan 1999 and Feb 2001.

Rapid industrialization, improper solid and toxic waste management practices in urban areas often lead to the degradation of groundwater, which then turns un-potable for future use. Ground water pollution not only affects the water quality but also threats human health, economic development and social prosperity. Suitability of groundwater quality of 5 bore wells and hand pump located in the sub-urban areas in Jalgaon city was assessed for drinking purpose based on the various water quality parameters required for the potable water in chapters 1 to 3. Also author suggest that, various test for quality parameters such as pH, Total dissolved solid (TDS), Temperature, conductivity, odour, colour, Turbidity, Hardness, Alkalinity, Chloride content, MPN are conducted on the collected ground water samples. The obtained results are compared with the drinking water quality requirement of WHO standard. From the comparison, the permissible and objectionable limits are decided and suitable treatments are recommended for the objectionable results which is covered in chapter 4. This book is most helpful in proper treatment of available ground water resources in the area for drinking purpose.

Slope stability and seepage analysis of earth dam is very important to ascertain the stability of the structure. The uses of analytical method of slope stability and seepage have gained popularity in recent years due to its capability to handle complex problems. The stability of earth dam depends on its geometry, its components, materials, properties of each component and the forces to which it is subjected. The design of earth dams involves many considerations that must be examined before initiating detailed stability analyses. Such as geological and subsurface explorations, the earth or rock-fill materials available for construction should be carefully studied. The research project focus on stability analysis carried out on Boradi village dam in Maharashtra in India and calculating results by using Geostudio software. The results of the factor of safety were considered to the Boradi village dam without water level, steady-state water level and water level drawdown by using analytical and Swedish circle method analysis to compare with Geostudio software method.

La rapida industrializzazione, le pratiche improprie di gestione dei rifiuti solidi e tossici nelle aree urbane portano spesso al degrado delle acque sotterranee, che poi diventano impoveribili per un uso futuro. L'inquinamento delle acque sotterranee non solo colpisce la qualità dell'acqua, ma minaccia anche la salute umana, lo sviluppo economico e la prosperità sociale. L'idoneità della qualità delle acque sotterranee di 5 pozzi e pompe a mano situati nelle aree suburbane della città di Jalgaon è stata valutata a scopo potabile sulla base dei vari parametri di qualità dell'acqua richiesti per l'acqua potabile nei capitoli da 1 a 3. Inoltre l'autore suggerisce che, vari test per i parametri di qualità come il pH, i solidi totali disciolti (TDS), la temperatura, la conducibilità, l'odore, il colore, la torbidità, la durezza, l'alcalinità, il contenuto di cloruro, MPN siano condotti sui campioni di acqua sotterranea raccolti. I risultati ottenuti sono confrontati con il requisito di qualità dell'acqua potabile dello standard OMS. Dal confronto, i limiti ammissibili e discutibili sono decisi e i trattamenti adatti sono raccomandati per i risultati discutibili che sono coperti nel capitolo 4. Questo libro è molto utile per il trattamento adeguato delle risorse di acqua freatica disponibili nella zona per scopi potabili.

Die rasche Industrialisierung und die unsachgemäße Bewirtschaftung fester und giftiger Abfälle in städtischen Gebieten führen häufig zu einer Verschlechterung des Grundwassers, das dann für die künftige Nutzung unbrauchbar wird. Die Verschmutzung des Grundwassers beeinträchtigt nicht nur die Wasserqualität, sondern bedroht auch die menschliche Gesundheit, die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung und den sozialen Wohlstand. Die Eignung der Grundwasserqualität von 5 Bohrbrunnen und einer Handpumpe, die sich in den suburbanen Gebieten der Stadt Jalgaon befinden, wurde auf der Grundlage der verschiedenen Wasserqualitätsparameter, die für Trinkwasser erforderlich sind, in den Kapiteln 1 bis 3 bewertet. Der Autor schlägt außerdem vor, dass verschiedene Tests für Qualitätsparameter wie pH-Wert, Gesamtmenge der gelösten Feststoffe (TDS), Temperatur, Leitfähigkeit, Geruch, Farbe, Trübung, Härte, Alkalinität, Chloridgehalt und MPN an den gesammelten Grundwasserproben durchgeführt werden. Die erhaltenen Ergebnisse werden mit den Anforderungen der WHO-Norm an die Trinkwasserqualität verglichen. Anhand des Vergleichs werden die zulässigen und unzulässigen Grenzwerte bestimmt und geeignete Behandlungen für die unzulässigen Ergebnisse empfohlen, die in Kapitel 4 behandelt werden. Dieses Buch ist sehr hilfreich bei der ordnungsgemäßen Aufbereitung der verfügbaren Grundwasserressourcen in der Region für Trinkwasserzwecke.

A poluição das águas subterrâneas não só afecta a qualidade da água como também ameaça a saúde humana, o desenvolvimento económico e a prosperidade social. A adequação da qualidade das águas subterrâneas de 5 poços e bomba manual localizados nas áreas suburbanas da cidade de Jalgaon foi avaliada para fins de consumo humano com base nos vários parâmetros de qualidade da água necessários para a água potável nos capítulos 1 a 3. Também o autor sugere que, vários testes de parâmetros de qualidade tais como pH, Sólido total dissolvido (TDS), Temperatura, condutividade, odor, cor, Turbidez, Dureza, Alcalinidade, Teor de cloretos, MPN são conduzidos nas amostras de águas subterrâneas recolhidas. Os resultados obtidos são comparados com os requisitos de qualidade da água potável da norma da OMS. A partir da comparação, os limites admissíveis e censuráveis são decididos e são recomendados tratamentos adequados para os resultados censuráveis que são abordados no capítulo 4. Este livro é de grande ajuda no tratamento adequado dos recursos de água subterrânea disponíveis na área para fins de consumo humano.
