Siddhartha is a literary masterpiece that has captivated seekers and readers ever since its publication many decades ago. Steppenwolf is a poetical self-portrait of a man who felt himself to be half-human and half-wolf. The Story of Emil Sinclair's Childhood is a historical novel by Hermann Hesse. It was published in 1919, and the introduction was added in 1960. The first edition of Demian was published under the pen name of Emil Sinclair, the name of the storyteller. However, Hesse was later revealed to be the author, and the 10th version was quickly named after him. When it was published in 1919, this transitional novel received immediate critical and popular acclaim. A masterpiece in the history of 20th-century literature, it reflects the writer's distraction with the duality of human nature and the achievement of spiritual fulfillment.

Im Oktober 1921, noch während der Niederschrift des Siddhartha , plante Hesse, einen märchenhaften Roman mit dem Titel »Aus dem Leben eines Zauberers« zu schreiben. Dieses Projekt wurde nie zu Ende geführt. Erhalten geblieben davon ist nur die Handschrift der Einleitung unter dem Titel Der Zauberer . Erfundene und autobiographische Elemente durchdringen sich darin auf eine Weise, daß es Hesse im Verlauf der Reinschrift wünschenswert erschien, beides voneinander zu trennen. So entstand 1923 einerseits das Märchen »Kindheit des Zauberers«, andererseits der »Kurzgefaßte Lebenslauf«, den er erstmals im Dezember 1924 anläßlich einer Lesung in der Stuttgarter Liederhalle öffentlich vorgetragen hat. Unser Band enthält alle drei Versionen dieses Stoffes und ermöglicht somit einen Einblick in Hermann Hesses Werkstatt.

Brüdi - so wurde Martin, der jüngste Sohn Hermann Hesses, von der Familie genannt. Als Hermann Hesse im April 1919 seine Familie verließ, um im Tessin auf der Südseite der Alpen ein ungebundenes Leben zu führen, kamen seine drei Söhne zu Pflegefamilien oder ins Heim. Ein Schock vor allem für Martin, gerade sieben Jahre alt. Wie Hesses erste Ehefrau Mia, die wegen einer manisch-depressiven Erkrankung immer wieder in Heilanstalten war, litt Martin unter dieser psychischen Erkrankung, die letztlich wohl auch zu seinem Freitod 1968 führte. Der 1919 beginnende und sich bis zu Hermann Hesses Tod 1962 fortsetzende Briefwechsel ist das eindrucksvolle Dokument einer Annäherung von Vater und Sohn, der Versuch, verlorenes Vertrauen mittels Briefgespräch neu herzustellen. Hier findet Hermann Hesse nach und nach zu seiner anfangs verweigerten Vaterrolle. Immer offener sprechen Vater und Sohn von ihren unerfüllten Hoffnungen und wachsenden Lebenszweifeln. Martin, der künstlerisch begabteste und zugleich labilste der Söhne, der Fotograf wird, gesteht: »Ich bin viel in der Dunkelkammer, mehr als mir lieb ist.« Martins Fotos des Vaters, über Jahrzehnte entstanden und zu Ikonen geworden, bezeugen wiedergefundene Nähe. Der Briefwechsel ist nicht nur in biografischer Hinsicht ein Ereignis. Denn im Gespräch beider entsteht zugleich eine Alltagsgeschichte der Schweiz von 1919 bis 1962.

One of Herman Hesse's earliest novels, In the Old Sun (In der Alten Sonne) was completed in 1908. The book, out of print in English for a hundred years, was originally published before the novels that were to make Hesse famous in the decades after World War II. The poorhouse derelicts of Gerbersau (Hesse's boyhood town of Cawl) appear to have walked out of the fictional world of Gottfried Keller, whose collection of short stories, The People of Seldwyla, was a favorite of Hesse's. The antics of Hürlin, the bankrupt manufacturer, and of Heller, a malicious and lazy former rope maker, are both humorous and poignant.
