Die Darstellung der Geldfixiertheit und der Unersättlichkeit als Triebfeder der Gesellschaft der postnapoleonischen Ära mündet nicht nur in eine Desillusionierung des Lesers, sondern auch in eine Kritik zeitgenössischen sozialen Handelns, das jeglicher traditioneller bzw. ethischer Grundwerte entbehrt [Wikipedia].
