Immanuel Kant (1724 - 1804) zählt bis heute zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern der abendländischen Philosophie im Zeichen der Aufklärung. Sein wohl bekanntestes Werk "Kritik der reinen Vernunft" stellt einen Wendepunkt in der Philosophiegeschichte und den Beginn der modernen Philosophie dar. Kant verfasste auch bedeutende Schriften zur Religions-, Rechts- und Geschichtsphilosophie, so auch das hier vorliegende Werk, das der Herausgeber Karl Vorländer in der ausführlichen Einleitung mit den Worten charakterisiert: "Kants Schrift ist ihrer Grundtendenz nach ein Versuch der Versöhnung zwischen Glauben und Wissen, biblischem Christentum und Vernunft. [...] Offenbarungs- ­und Vernunftreligion sind ihm ... nicht zwei außereinander befindliche (ex­zentrische), sondern konzentrische Kreise, d. h. in der christlichen Offenbarungslehre ist das 'reine Ver­nunftsystem der Religion', auf das seine Absicht geht, enthalten."Nachdruck der fünften Auflage aus dem Jahr 1922.

Immanuel Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals ranks alongside Plato's Republic and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics as one of the most profound and influential works in moral philosophy ever written. In Kant's own words, its aim is to identify and corroborate the supreme principle of morality, the categorical imperative. He argues that human beings are ends in themselves, never to be used by anyone merely as a means, and that universal and unconditional obligations must be understood as an expression of the human capacity for autonomy and self-governance. As such, they are laws of freedom.

This is Kant's first contribution to moral philosophy. It argues for an a priori basis for morality. Where the "Critique of Pure Reason" laid out Kant's metaphysical and epistemological ideas, this relatively short, primarily meta-ethical, work was intended to outline and define the concepts and arguments shaping his future work, "The Metaphysics of Morals". The treatise is broken into a preface, followed by three sections. Kant's argument works from common reason up to the supreme unconditional law, in order to identify its existence. He then works backwards from there to prove the relevance and weight of the moral law. The third and final section of the book is famously obscure, and it is partly because of this that Kant later, in 1788, decided to publish the Critique of Practical Reason.

The Metaphysical Elements of Ethics is classic philosophy text by the German philosopher Immanuel Kant that imcludes this passage: "If there exists on any subject a philosophy (that is, a system of rational knowledge based on concepts), then there must also be for this philosophy a system of pure rational concepts, independent of any condition of intuition, in other words, a metaphysic. It may be asked whether metaphysical elements are required also for every practical philosophy, which is the doctrine of duties, and therefore also for Ethics, in order to be able to present it as a true science (systematically), not merely as an aggregate of separate doctrines (fragmentarily). As regards pure jurisprudence, no one will question this requirement; for it concerns only what is formal in the elective will, which has to be limited in its external relations according to laws of freedom; without regarding any end which is the matter of this will. Here, therefore, deontology is a mere scientific doctrine (doctrina scientiae)."
