Oberon, A Romantic and Fairy Opera Carl Maria von Webers Schwanengesang auf ein Libretto des englischen Buhnenautors James Robinson -Planche- hatte am 12. April 1826 am Covent Garden Theatre in London seine umjubelte Premiere. Auf dem europaischen Kontinent verbreitete sich das Stuck vorrangig in Karl Gottfried Theodor Winklers Ubersetzung, die auch die Grundlage fur den vom Komponisten noch kurz vor seinem Tod am 5. Juni 1826 in London angefertigten deutschen Klavierauszug bildete. Trotz der erfolgreichen Urauffuhrung und einer beeindruckenden Auffuhrungsserie in der ersten Halfte des 19. Jahrhunderts gab das auf Christoph Martin Wielands Epos beruhende Libretto immer wieder Anlass zur Kritik, die zu einer Vielzahl von Bearbeitungsversuchen fuhrte, letztlich aber nie die abweichende Asthetik des Londoner Opern-betriebs zur Kenntnis nahm. Der vorliegende Band prsentiert erstmals das Libretto in wissenschaftlich-kritischer Edition in einer Synopse von englischem Original und deutscher Adaption. Dabei wird der Text unter Bercksichtigung aller einschlgigen berlieferten Quellen im speziellen Kontext seiner Entstehung und berlieferung sowie im Vergleich zu bekannten zeitgenssischen Dramatisierungen desselben Sujets betrachtet. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der Darstellung von Textgenese und Webers Einflussnahme auf die ursprngliche Werkgestalt.
