Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Controlling, grade: 1,3, Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences (Wiesbaden Business School), language: English, abstract: The main goal of this thesis is to thoroughly investigate what digital transformation is and which general success factors exist for businesses. It then collates in a concise way whether and to what extent selected German car manufacturers comply withthese success factors."Once a new technology rolls over you, if yoüre not part of the steamroller, yoüre part of the road"¿ - Stewart BrandThis metaphor skillfully illustrates what happens to businesses that do not take part in technological progression: they get obliterated. In addition, the cycle of new technologies is spinning faster and faster ever since, making it increasingly difficult forcompanies to survive and flourish. As evidence for this situation the average longevity of businesses in the S&P 500 index can be adduced. While in 1964, in average, a business would stay 33 years in the index, the duration went down to 24 yearsin 2016. It is estimated that this number will be cut in half by the year 2027.The major force behind this in the recent past is the digital transformation. Just a few years ago it was common standard to rent a movie in a video rental store, buy books at the local book store and to take pictures with analogue cameras. Amongthe most famous businesses in these markets were Blockbuster, Borders and Kodak. Nowadays, they are immaterial. The first two filed for bankruptcy and the latter is still trying to salvage itself. All of them share the same fate: they underestimatedthe change that came with digital innovations. In their place digital champions nowreign: Netflix, Amazon and Samsung. If a similar fate would befall the German automotive industry, it would be devastating for the whole economy as over 1.8 million jobs are directly or indirectly dependent on it. In fact, among the four highest grossing companies in Germany 2017were three car manufacturers. The extreme significance of this industry is evident.

Applying demand-side integration (DSI) programs for electric vehicles (EVs) is important for improving system reliability and assisting in integrating renewables into the energy system. At the same time, EV users are attracted to DSI programs due to their financial benefits. An application context for applying DSI programs for EVs that has not yet been investigated but seems to hold great potential is heavy-duty electric transport vehicles (ETVs) operating in closed transport systems. A particularly favorable characteristic in this area of application is the possibility of pooling these vehicles ¿ each with a considerable battery storage capacity ¿ on company grounds. This cumulative dissertation primarily aims to identify and assess feasible and suitable DSI programs for an ETV fleet. To ensure the practical relevance of the results, the analyses were based on a large-scale electric mobility. It was found that the load-shifting potential of the ETV fleet can be used for a broad range of DSI programs, the most promising of which resulted in a significant potential for cost saving (>30%) compared to uncontrolled charging. Furthermore, the analyses reveal that an ETV fleet can be more profitable than a comparable diesel-powered one. Overall, the results have the potential to convince further fleet operators to use ETVs and adopt DSI solutions, which is crucial for shaping a sustainable transport and energy sector.

The German linguists Johannes Schmidt (1843-1901) and Hugo Schuchardt (1842-1927) sought to answer many questions relating to the development of Indo-European languages, which are all believed to be descended from a single common ancestor. Schmidt's Verwantschaftsverhaltnisse was originally published in 1872 and Schuchardt's Uber die Lautgesetze followed in 1885; here they are reissued together in one volume. Schmidt's work developed the 'wave model' of language change, to which Schuchardt also subscribed. According to this theory, linguistic innovations spread outwards concentrically like waves, which become progressively weaker as time elapses and the distance from their point of origin increases. Since later changes may not cover the same area, there may be no sharp boundaries between neighbouring languages or dialects. This theory stood in opposition to the tree model and the doctrine of sound laws propounded by the Neogrammarian school of linguists, which is roundly critiqued in Schuchardt's contribution.
