For some years, much of my leisure time has been devoted to the study of the anatomy, development, and habits of the Annulosa, and especially of Insects, on which subjects I have published various memoirs, chiefly in the Transactions of the Royal, Linnæan, and Entomological Societies: of these papers I subjoin a list. Although the details, of which these memoirs necessarily for the most part consist, offer little interest, excepting to those persons who are specially devoted to Entomology, still there are portions which, having reference to the nature of metamorphoses and to the origin of insects, are of a more general character. I have also briefly referred to these questions in a Monograph of the Collembola and Thysanura, recently published by the Ray Society, and in the Opening Address to the Biological Section of the British Association at Brighton in 1872. Under these circumstances, it has been suggested to me that a small volume, containing, at somewhat greater length, in a more accessible form, and with the advantage of illustrations, the conclusions to which I have been led on this interesting subject, might not be altogether without interest to the general reader. The result, which has already appeared in the pages of _Nature_, is now submitted to the public, with some additions. I am well aware that it has no pretence to be in any sense a complete treatise; that the subject itself is one as to which our knowledge is still very incomplete, and on which the highest authorities are much divided in opinion. Whatever differences of opinion, however, there may be as to the views here put forward, the facts on which they are based will, I believe, be found correct. On this point I speak with the more confidence, on account of the valuable assistance I have received from many friends: to Mr. and Mrs. Busk and Dr. Hooker I am especially indebted.

"The Pleasures of Life" is a book written by Sir John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury, and first published in 1887. The book explores the idea of finding joy and fulfillment in the various aspects of life, emphasizing the importance of both intellectual and sensory pleasures. John Lubbock was a prominent British banker, scientist, and politician who was well-known for his contributions to the fields of archaeology, biology, and entomology. In this work, Lubbock presents a wide-ranging and philosophical exploration of the sources of happiness and contentment in life. He delves into various aspects of human existence, from appreciating the beauty of nature and the arts to the value of education, culture, and leisure. He emphasizes the importance of cultivating a well-rounded life that balances intellectual pursuits and the enjoyment of simple, everyday pleasures. "The Pleasures of Life" encourages readers to take notice of the small, often overlooked joys in life, such as the beauty of a flower, the satisfaction of learning something new, or the pleasure of spending time with loved ones. Lubbock's writing reflects his belief in the significance of curiosity, the pursuit of knowledge, and the ability to derive happiness from a multitude of experiences. Throughout the book, Lubbock draws on his own experiences and observations to illustrate his points. He also weaves in the wisdom of thinkers and writers from various time periods and cultures, adding depth and diversity to his exploration of the pleasures that life has to offer. "The Pleasures of Life" is a classic work that encourages readers to appreciate the richness and diversity of human experiences and the potential for happiness that can be found in even the simplest of moments. It remains a source of inspiration for those seeking a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

A practical guide to Mindfulness and Happiness. In this book, Sir John Lubbock, shares his personal philosophy for living. Topics covered are: the duty of happiness, the blessing of friends, the choice of books, the value of time, the pleasure of travel, ambition, health, the beauties of Nature, labor and rest, the troubles of life, love, the destiny of man,...A must-read for everyone trying to excel in a world of increasing workloads, stress, and negativity, The Pleasures of Life isn't only about how to become happier. It's about how to reap the benefits of a happier and more positive mind-set to achieve the extraordinary in our lives.Excerpt : "Each day is a little life. All other good gifts depend on time for their value. What are friends, books, or health, the interest of travel or the delights of home, if we have not time for their enjoyment? Time is often said to be money, but it is more-it is life; and yet many who would cling desperately to life, think nothing of wasting time. Ask of the wise, says Schiller in Lord Sherbrooke's translation,"The moments we foregoEternity itself cannot retrieve." And, in the words of Dante,"For who knows most, him loss of time most grieves." Not that a life of drudgery should be our ideal. Far from it. Time spent in innocent and rational enjoyments, in healthy games, in social and family intercourse, is well and wisely spent. Games not only keep the body in health, but give a command over the muscles and limbs which cannot be overvalued. Moreover, there are temptations which strong exercise best enables us to resist. It is the idle who complain they cannot find time to do that which they fancy they wish. In truth, people can generally make time for what they choose to do; it is not really the time but the will that is wanting: and the advantage of leisure is mainly that we may have the power of choosing our own work, not certainly that it confers any privilege of idleness."
