Gulliver¿s Travels was published in 1726 and is probably the most famous work by Jonathan Swift. It was an instant hit¿selling out within a week¿and has never been out of print, as well as having been adapted many times.Lemuel Gulliver, an English surgeon on the Antelope, is shipwrecked and washed up on the island of Lilliput, where the inhabitants are less than six inches tall. This part of the book is a thinly veiled attack on the political classes of the time, as the Lilliputians focus on the minutiae of life, most notably the rift which has developed according to which end of a boiled egg gets opened at breakfast¿the big end or the little end.On his second recorded journey he is abandoned on an island of giants where he is paraded as a curiosity at local markets and fairs. On his third journey he is marooned by pirates and is rescued by the inhabitants of a floating island devoted to music, mathematics and astronomy. On his final journey he meets the Houyhnhnms, a race of talking horses who have subdued the Yahoos, creatures who resemble humans.On his return to England, Gulliver has a very different outlook on life and views the human race in a very different way.

Pero el suyo fue un caso particular: rápidamente se convirtió en el protegido del rey Guillermo y en médico de la corte. En 1708, Swift ¿tanto por su odio a la ignorancia como por razones políticas¿ decidió demolerlo; la manera en que lo hizo constituye, al mismo tiempo que una de sus burlas más crueles, la demostración del poder casi mortífero de su literatura y de su inteligencia. Adoptando el seudónimo de Isaac Bickerstaff, astrólogo ficticio, publicó sus Predicciones para el año 1708, en las que anticipó la muerte de Partridge para el 29 de marzo. La burla se hizo célebre; amigos de Swift, como Pope, Congreve, Gay o Steele, tomaron parte en la «controversia» publicando anuncios en los que probaban o se condolían de la muerte del astrólogo. Fue el fin de Partridge. Casi se puede decir que Swift lo mató escribiendo.

Al ser hoy en día los hombres de ingenio tan numerosos y penetrantes, parece que los jerarcas de la Iglesia y el Estado empiezan a ser víctimas de horribles aprensiones, no sea que esos caballeros, durante los largos intervalos de paz, dediquen su ocio a horadar los puntos flacos de la religión y del gobierno. Para prevenir lo cual, últimamente se ha dedicado mucho tiempo a pensar en proyectos que quiten fuerza y agudeza a esos formidables indagadores para que dejen de escudriñar y de discurrir acerca de asuntos tan delicados. Finalmente han escogido uno que requerirá cierto tiempo y cierto coste perfeccionar. Entretanto, al crecer el peligro cada hora que pasa, debido a nuevas hornadas de ingeniosos, todos ellos provistos (como es razonable temer) de pluma, tinta y papel, que podrían convertirse, con una hora de aviso, en panfletos y otras armas ofensivas listas para su inmediata ejecución, se juzgó de absoluta necesidad pensar en algún remedio inmediato hasta que el proyecto principal se llevase a su madurez. A este respecto, cierto observador curioso y refinado, en una gran comisión de hace unos días, hizo este importante descubrimiento: ue los marineros tienen la costumbre, cuando encuentran una ballena, de echarle un tonel vacío a modo de entretenimiento, para distraerla y evitar que se comporte con violencia contra el barco. Esta parábola fue inmediatamente mitificada; se interpretó que la ballena era el Leviatán de Hobbes, que agita y juega con todos los esquemas de la religión y del gobierno, siendo muchos de ellos huecos, secos, vacíos y ruidosos, además de rígidos y propensos a la rotación: ese es el leviatán, del que los temibles ingenios de nuestro tiempo se dice que toman prestadas sus armas. La nave en peligro se comprende fácilmente que se trata de su vieja antagonista, la comunidad. Pero cómo interpretar lo del tonel era un asunto difícil; después de larga indagación y debate, se mantuvo el significado literal y se decretó que, para evitar que esos leviatanes revolviesen y jugasen con la comunidad, que de por sí es más que propensa a la oscilación, se les distrajese de ese juego mediante el Cuento de un tonel. Y considerando que mi genio está felizmente dotado a ese respecto, tuve el honor de que se me concediera ocuparme de tal empeño.
