East Asia has been relatively free of large-scale warfare in the 1990s. However, the region's lack of security organizations or even of a sense of community has made many observers uneasy about the future. This paper assesses the prospects for future stability by taking up questions of identities as an important element motivating or constraining policy-making in the region.
