Ksi¿¿ka ta analizuje zachowanie klastrów spó¿g¿oskowych w angielskich mieczach zapo¿yczkowych w Shonie, czego dowodem jest dyskurs mówiony w j¿zyku angielskim, jakim jest Shona. Teoretycznie Shona nie dopuszcza klastrów spó¿g¿oskowych, poniewä naruszaj¿ one struktur¿ sylaby Shona, któr¿ jest CV. Jednak¿e, poniewä Shona - angielskie j¿zyki dwuj¿zyczne s¿ kompetentne zarówno w j¿zyku Shona, jak i angielskim, maj¿ one tendencj¿ do przenoszenia niektórych struktur fonologicznych j¿zyka angielskiego na Shona, zmieniaj¿c tym samym struktur¿ fonotaktyczn¿ tego j¿zyka. Ksi¿¿ka ta przekonuje zatem do w¿¿czenia tych klastrów spó¿g¿osek do obecnej ortografii Shona, poniewä stäy si¿ one cz¿¿ci¿ i cz¿¿ci¿ inwentarza fonologicznego Shona.

This book looks at the phonology of the variety of English spoken by Shona -English bilinguals in Zimbabwe termed as ¿The Zimbabwean English¿ in this book. There are significant linguistic differences between the Zimbabwean English Variety and the British Received Pronunciation variety in terms of their vowel inventories. This book theoretically shows, how Shona-English Bilinguals employ the phonological processes to reduce the Received Pronunciation¿ s complex Vowels like diphthongs, triphthongs long vowels and complex monopthongs to Zimbabwean English¿s simple monopthongs. This book argues therefore, for the legitimacy of Zimbabwean English as a distinct variety of English with linguistic features that distinguishes it from Received Pronunciation.

This book looks at the retention of consonant clusters in English loanwords in Shona as evidenced by the spoken discourse of Shona- English bilinguals. Theoretically Shona does not allow consonant clusters because they violate the syllable structure of Shona which is CV. However, because Shona - English bilinguals are competent in both Shona and English they tend to transfer some phonological structures of English into Shona hence changing the phonotactic structure of this language. This book argues therefore, for the inclusion of these consonant clusters in the current Shona orthography because they have become part and parcel of Shona phoneme inventory.

This book looks at how English loanwords are accommodated in Shona, a Southern Bantu language. The first article looks at phonological processes that are utilized when Ndau, a dialect of Shona which spokenly mainly in Chipinge borrows words from English. Theses are glide epenthesis, vowel epenthesis and substitution of sounds that are not found in Ndau. Glide and vowel epentheses are triggered to maintain the syllable structure of Ndau which is basically CV. The second article looks at how English phonological structure is influencing Shona phonology. This is because English loanwords in Shona are maintaining some of their phonological features so much that the syllable structure of Shona is changing from the basic CV to CCV because consonant clusters in English loanwords are maintained in Shona. This second article therefore argues for the existence of the new variety of Shona which is gradually developing.
