Letters from a Stoic still holds the power to enthrall. The epistles were written by Seneca at the end of his life, during his retirement, after he had worked for the Emperor Nero for fifteen years. They are addressed to Lucilius, the then procurator of Sicily, although he is known only through Seneca's writings. Whether or not Seneca and Lucilius actually corresponded, or whether in fact Seneca created the work as a form of fiction, is not clear from the historical record. This is the third volume of the Letters, Epistles Letter XCIII - CXXIV.

Based on a comprehensive investigation of all manuscripts and florilegia, this edition provides the first secure reconstruction of the two hyparchetypes from which all former manuscripts of Seneca's tragedies ultimately stem.

This is a uniquely surviving specimen of prose-and-verse satire from the Roman world. The English version facing the text makes the work available to the general reader who may not have any Latin. The text, which is based on a critical examination of all the manuscripts, will be indispensable to scholars.

This new edition concentrates on the dramatic qualities of Phaedra and examines the Greek and Roman background to the play.
