Había en la ilustrísima ciudad de Sevilla, allá por los tiempos en que llegaban a la Torre del Oro, que a la margen del claro y profundo Guadalquivir se levanta, los galeones cargados de oro que venían de las Indias, y cuando reinaba en España el señor rey don Felipe el Segundo, de clara y pavorosa memoria, en la calle de las Sierpes, y en una rinconada a la que jamás llegaba el sol, como no fuese en verano y al mediodía, un tinglado de madera, de dos altos, desvencijado y giboso, al que llamaban casa, y en el cual vivía una valiente persona, cuyo apellido y nombre de pila ignoraba él mismo, que si los tuvo olvidolos, y nadie le conocía ni él respondía más que por el sobrenombre de Viváismilaños, cortesanía que empleaba para saludar a todo el mundo. Era de mediana edad, entre los treinta y cinco y los cuarenta, de no mala apariencia, agradable y sonriente el rostro, morena la color, agudas las facciones, sutil la sonrisa, la mirada rebuscona, y no mezquino el cuerpo; vivía de rasurar y rapar, entreteniendo durante el día sus ocios con el puntear de una vihuela morisca que le dejó su padre, ya harto usada por sus abuelos, y cantando como un ruiseñor las alegres canciones de la tierra, y las que él mismo componía, para lo que se daba muy buena gracia; comadreaba a las comadres de la vecindad, y, fuera de esto, las vendía untos y bebedizos, y las leía el sino, y las traía a todas engañadas y pendientes de sus labios; y a tal llegaba la fama de brujo y de hechicero del señor Viváismilaños, que más de una vez la Inquisición se había metido en sus asuntos, y había quien se acordaba de haberle visto con coroza y sambenito, luciendo su persona en un auto de fe.
