Mit der Familie des Stuart-Königs Charles I geht die junge Hofdame Margaret Lucas zur Cromwell-Zeit ins Exil nach Frankreich, wo sie auf William Cavendish trifft, Oberbefehlshaber der königlichen Armee im Norden, Erzieher des Kronprinzen und bedeutender Mäzen. Sie heiratet den 30 Jahre älteren Witwer und begegnet in seinem Haus Gelehrten wie Descartes und Hobbes. Im Exil und nach der Rückkehr nach England beginnt sie, die nur eine sehr oberflächliche Bildung genossen hatte, naturwissenschaftliche Abhandlungen und literarische Werke zu schreiben.
