Maria Montessori war sich der Rolle der Eltern sehr bewusst. Dieses Buch besteht aus 11 bisher unveröffentlichten Vorträgen Maria Montessoris, in denen sie den Eltern eine einführende Erklärung ihrer Vision von Bildung gibt und ihnen erklärt, wie sie ihre eigene Rolle bei der Entwicklung ihres Kindes besser verstehen können. Die Beiträge haben eine Leichtigkeit im Ausdruck, die in Montessoris Werken normalerweise nicht zu finden ist.

Dieser Band sammelt Texte Maria Montessoris aus ihrem Spätwerk, die vor allem ihre Reformvorstellungen zur Sekundarschule und zur Universität enthalten, aber auch einige Beiträge zur Weiterentwicklung ihrer Grundschulkonzeption. Im Zentrum steht der Entwurf der Schule als einer »Erfahrungsschule des sozialen Lebens«, wie er im bekannten »Erdkinderplan«, der 1939 erstmals auf Englisch veröffentlicht wurde, zusammenfassend dargestellt wird.

Das Werk stellt in Auswahl und Anordnung eine Einführung in die Pädagogik Maria Montessoris in ihrer weiterentwickelten Form dar. Beispielsweise sind darin auch Überlegungen zur Gestaltung der Sekundarschule und zum Lernen an Universitäten enthalten. Sie stammen aus der Zeit zwischen 1936 und 1939. Das Werk wurde erstmals 1941 herausgegeben.

Die in diesem Band veröffentlichten Texte gehen in ihrem Kernbestand zurück auf eine Vortragsreihe Maria Montessoris in Brüssel im September und Oktober 1922. Sie ermöglichen einen differenzierten Einblick in Montessoris Vorstellung zur Erziehung des kleinen Kindes und berücksichtigen vor allem die Familienerziehung. In den Anhang werden zusätzlich einige thematisch einschlägige Texte Maria Montessoris aufgenommen.

In diesem Buch wird neben zwei Beiträgen aus dem Spannungsfeld "Kind - Gesellschaft - Welt" und den Kernstücken aus "Von der Kindheit zur Jugend" neu die Übersetzung der Altersschrift "Menschliche Potentialität und Erziehung" vorgelegt, die Montessoris Bemühungen um eine "Kosmische Erziehung" betrifft. Den Abschluß bildet ein Aufsatz des Enkels Maria Montessoris, des Psychologen und Psychotherapeuten Dr. Mario Montessori jun.
